Duckett looks like odd man out

T.J. Duckett's contract indicated that he would have a sizeable role in the Seattle offense, possibly reprising his old Falcons role as vulture extraordinaire. Mike Holmgren, however, disagrees.

He doesn't know how to use Duckett and he doesn't appear to want to. His public comments make it appear that he wasn't in favor of Duckett's signing in the first place. This is the type of thing that happens when a head coach is stripped of his GM duties, then announces he's in his final season.

All of this means that Julius Jones and Maurice Morris should carry the bulk of the load in Seattle, which boosts their fantasy value a bit. They are more likely to get goal line chances. Duckett is likely to finish outside the top-50 running backs for the third straight season.

TJ Duckett has just been in no man's land since leaving Atlanta. Washington, Detroit and now Seattle. No one knew how to use him or why they had him.

He must have the worst agent in the world.

Duckett may not be worth having this year, but he played for Jim Mora in Atlanta, no? The same Jim Mora tabbed as Holmgren's successor.

The Duckett signing and Holmgren's inability to figure out a role for him may foreshadow a change in offensive philosophy from pass-happy to power-running when Mora takes over after the season.

Very good point, Chad, I hadn't considered that angle yet.

Atlanta has been the only team to utilize him well so far, and Mora Jr. was witness to all of it. If Holmgren didn't want him (first time I'd heard that), then there's really not another solid explanation than they did it for Mora Jr. If anyone, Mora will find a way to use him effectively again.

hes obviously a mora fan favorite. ultimately mora must have had some input in the signing, or the gm. either way someone was adiment to have him on board given his overpriced contract.

i felt jones and morris would have higher value all along. jones is more of a first teamer anyway, and morris is a 'holmgren guy', just like engram. somehow he always finds a way to get PT.

but imo, duckett's no more than a very poor mans goal line vulture... maybe more next year, but who would want to hold on to him for that long.

after what i saw and what the local beat writers were saying about duckett last year... at the end of the season, he was the only one still playing hard every snap, and he turned in some solid performances.
they said he was a single shining light in a very dark clubhouse, and he's a leader regardless of how bad things are going and no matter what other players are trying to bring him down.
as a fellow Spartan... i wish he could find a situation that fit him.
