Winslow vs. Witten

Okay, we've got the results from the last two player matchups. In a surprise (to me), Heath Miller edged out Jeremy Shockey, with Vernon Davis finishing a relatively close third. Wes Welker also trashed Roy Williams in their head-to-head matchup.
Today's battle will go back to tight ends one more time. I'm going to take Antonio Gates out of the discussion because of his foot surgery. If he's ready to play Week 1, he's number one in my rankings. We'll see how that plays out.
But even if Gates is ready to go Week 1, I'd put Kellen Winslow and Witten in the first tier with him. They are both coming off career seasons and are helping to change the way we look at the value of tight ends.
In standard leagues, both players would have finished as top-20 wideouts last year. In PPR leagues, Witten moves up to the top-12. That makes them reasonable fourth-round picks overall, but which one goes first? Winslow seems to be a bionic soldier, improving with every surgery. Witten has never topped seven scores, but he's topped 750 yards per season since 2004. What say you, Pancake Blockers?
And yes, I'm catching up on emails, sleep, and marathon training. We'll be back with more regular posting next week.

I think after last season it's obvious that Witten is going to run way with this one, but I think long-term things will change a lot, as always seems to be the case with TEs.
Witten is going to be great as long as Romo is at the helm, but if Romo goes down Witten is an average Top 10 TE. To me, Winslow will be a top 3 TE aslong as he's healthy no matter whos QB, or what team he plays for. Winslow is just that big a talent.
If I'm ranking long-term. Winslow is the winner.
I think Winlows injury concerns are probably overplayed at this point. If I could get Winslows production after surgery, I'd tell all my players to go to the doctor.

BOTH. The WR position is deeper this year than the past several years and the RB position seems pretty thin. So why not stock up on RB's in the early round and make up for not taking WR's early by drafting both these TE's. One theyre numbers are as good as second tier recivers. Second thier position makes them more of a threat in the red zone than second tier wr's.

I love both of these players but for very different reasons. Witten is an effort player who maximizes his talent. Winslow is a beast who has ridiculous talent. In my younger years (read: 2 years ago), I would have gone with the tantalizing talent of Winslow. But these days I'm looking for consistent production with room for improvement and that's Witten in my book. He and Romo have chemistry and he showed that when teams take away TO for stretches, he can dominate a game. I think his numbers will only go up with the Cowboys standing pat at wideout.
