Winslow vs. Witten

Okay, we've got the results from the last two player matchups. In a surprise (to me), Heath Miller edged out Jeremy Shockey, with Vernon Davis finishing a relatively close third. Wes Welker also trashed Roy Williams in their head-to-head matchup.

Today's battle will go back to tight ends one more time. I'm going to take Antonio Gates out of the discussion because of his foot surgery. If he's ready to play Week 1, he's number one in my rankings. We'll see how that plays out.

But even if Gates is ready to go Week 1, I'd put Kellen Winslow and Witten in the first tier with him. They are both coming off career seasons and are helping to change the way we look at the value of tight ends.

In standard leagues, both players would have finished as top-20 wideouts last year. In PPR leagues, Witten moves up to the top-12. That makes them reasonable fourth-round picks overall, but which one goes first? Winslow seems to be a bionic soldier, improving with every surgery. Witten has never topped seven scores, but he's topped 750 yards per season since 2004. What say you, Pancake Blockers?

And yes, I'm catching up on emails, sleep, and marathon training. We'll be back with more regular posting next week.

I agree with most of the previous comments.
Witten clear advantage over Winslow. That being said, there is a noticeable dropoff between Gates & Witten. I like Heap as a good value pick at TE this year, since owners will overvalue young stars with potential like Winslow & Davis. Don't forget that Winslow is an effing soldier!

1. Witten
2. Winslow (not a huge dropoff though)

So the talent around Witten won't take his touches away but open things up, and the talent around Winslow will?

The way I break it down is they're both in good offenses. Things could more easily break down for Dallas because if TO gets hurt or Romo gets hurt, the situation is suddenly pretty bleak. The Browns have more depth everywhere to keep up a reasonable supporting cast.

Romo is a mobile qb who might get hit more than he needs to, and T.O. is 35 and has missed games with ankle injuries in recent years.

Winslow has a higher ceiling, but what does the Browns drafting Martin Rucker say about their confidence in his ability to overcome more surgeries/their concerns about his contract demands.

So the risk for Witten is his supporting cast gets taken away and defenses focus on him. The risk for Winslow is he isn't even on the field.

Winslow is a better talent/athlete, but he's now in a mix of a high talent receiving core, whereas Witten has become the supposed #2 threat in Dallas. If I want one on my team, it's Winslow, but if I'm picking for fantasy;

1. Witten 2. Windslow

Wow. Despite being a Cowboys fan, I'm very surprised that Witten seems to be walking away with this.

I'd take Winslow in a heartbeat.

Witten does not seem to be consistent year to year. Plus, Dallas should have Terry Glenn back this year to provide more competition. And they added a home run threat in Felix Jones, which means that A) Barber will be on the field even more often than last year, possibly reducing Witten's touches, and B) that Jones may break a few longer touchdowns or be used more inside the 20s, also reducing Witten's opportunities.

Winslow has proven that when healthy he's absolute money, especially in PPR leagues.

And so while I don't necessarily think that Witten's numbers will go up, I think there is less chance that he will repeat his career year than there is that Winslow will continue to put up top 3 TE numbers.

I'll take mark bavaro circa Tecmo bowl 1

Ok seriously I'd go Witten just because that many knee surgeries is going to result in a long stretch on the sidelines at some point, and I HATE having to carry 2 tight ends.

Don't know what kind of Cowboys fan you really are to take Winslow hands down over Witten. The only reasons Witten numbers haven't been great before is because of the qb situation in Dallas. Before Romo Dallas was in disarray. Witten does not have the health or attitude issues that Winslow has and his fantasy number should stay consistent with last year-as long as Romo's healthy. Witten over Winslow.
