The Wayback Machine
I first heard about the Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive this morning. Imagine my glee in finding out what Rotoworld looked like almost a decade ago. My favorite blurb includes Mo Vaughn homering off Pat Hentgen.
Fast forward a few years, and I randomly chose a day in August of 2003, when Rotoworld was in all our text-heavy glory. At the top of the page is an ad for a sports writer.
And that, my friends, is how I got started at Rotoworld. Actually, I was pointed to the listing by my friend Bob, who was a Rotoworld nut long before me. So, uh, thanks Bob for my career once again. That ad is why I don't really have a good answer when aspiring writers ask how I got into the industry. I can advise much better on how to stay there.
I love the ad, which has Rick Wolf (still at Rotoworld) written all over it. While I wasn't a journalism major, I can confirm that Somers, NY is indeed beautiful.
Okay, I'm going to stop this trip down memory lane before everyone starts throwing virtual tomotoes. Or before I find any more rankings that have Carson Palmer 15 spots below Tommy Maddox. It seems like a lot longer than four years ago I could write this sentence: "Justin McCareins is a wild improvement over Curtis Conway."
