Puff Piece Detector: Robert Meachem
OTA and minicamp season, like Spring, is in full bloom. Like the sudden shedding of clothing in Central Park, NFL writers and players are all too happy to shed the disappointment of last season. There are excuses why last year sucked, and measures have been taken to correct it. Optimism rules.
From time to time, I'll take a look at a popular subject of the offseason puff piece and decide whether it has any merit. Today's subject is Robert Meachem.
Frankly, the Robert Meachem puff piece was easy to see coming. It happens every year with first-round picks who struggle as rookies. Meachem has been getting positive writeups every other day this offseason because he's healthy and has a good attitude.
I'm not buying it just yet. While Meachem was often hurt last year, he was healthy enough to practice most of the season and still couldn't get on the field. I've done a little sleuthing, and the word in New Orleans was that his confidence was shot. He wasn't ready for the pro game. I look at all these raves from the GM and coaching staff and see a team trying to build a young man up. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm holding out.
I saw a similar pattern a few years back in New Orleans with another young receiver, Devery Henderson, who couldn't get on the field as a rookie after leaving the SEC. Henderson never truly developed. Now Henderson and Meachem are battling for a role on the team, with an outside chance to start. Fantasy leaguers can stay away from the winner.

Whatever his issues are, the Saints will give him every opportunity to prove himself because of being drafted and being paid as a first rounder. Colston on the other hand, complete stud being paid as a 7th rounder after two great seasons.
The system must be changed and its the system that makes Meachem a " puff " because in the old days, drafting was to be a bonus to your team. Now its to " make " your team because of money commitments.
