Braylon Edwards vs. Andre Johnson

If it seems like I'm leaning on you guys more than ever while preparing this magazine, well, it's because I believe in the wisdom of the Pancake Blocks crowd. I love getting informed opinion to consider when making tough choices. It doesn't mean I go along with it all of course, but I do value it highly.

One of the toughest decisions I'm wrestling with currently is near the top of my receiver rankings. I won't say exactly where, but the battle is between Braylon Edwards and Andre Johnson. My gut says one thing, my numbers say another. They are both true game-breakers who have put themselves firmly among the receiver elite. But if you're on the clock today, who are you taking?

It depends on the team you have. If you have a great team, go with AJ, Edwards numbers early will be better, but when the weather turns, just at playoff time, you are in trouble. He killed me in the playoffs last year.

Houston Texans fan and season ticket holder here. I've got to tell you, from a fantasy perspective, drafting for the upcoming season only, I take Edwards (wow, that hurt). But the Texans offense is coming along (i.e. the line is a LOT better than it's been in previous years) and AJ has a better supporting cast in the receiving game than he's had. But their defense isn't all THAT good and there's no consistent running game. As the DEF & RB situations improve, so will AJ's numbers (less able to focus on him) which is why I'd take AJ in keeper leagues.

Having a bad defense forces a team to pass more to keep up so it shouldn't downgrade a WR.

andre johnson.
but it's close. from what i was able to count (taking out dups and non-picks) it is 11 - 9 advantage AJ, with my pick.

the "injury prone" card is WAY overvalued in fantasy leagues. every player gets hurt and there are only a few that are truly "injury prone" (see kevin jones) edwards is just as prone to an injury as johnson... as are the majority of nfl players. there are only a few in the league that play positions that allow you to be smart enough to avoid getting injured. fortunately for these two and their futures, wr is one of those positions (just ask torry holt and marvin harrison, until very recently). i actually think johnson is less likely to be injured b/c i believe he is a smarter wr than braylon.
edwards gets by on ability and atheticism and andre get by on pretty good athletics and smarts. he runs crisp routes and knows where to be and when to be there... braylon fights for balls, and no doubt, he's a killer... but i'll take the smarter receiver who understands the offense and has a good report with his qb every day.
speaking of qb's... that's all a toss up. no one knows much about any 3 of those guys. after the first half of the year, anderson was in mvp talks, but then he faded... so that leaves you questioning him. schaub was too injured to really tell how he'll play over a full season (although i liked what he and johnson put on the field in the short time they were together). and quinn... well, don't even start with him yet. the guy's thrown like 8 nfl passes. we have no idea what he'll do... i don't care what the "many circles" say.
and there are too many mouths to feed in cleveland. not enough balls to go around.
so... basically i like johnson for all the same reasons that everyone's already given and i just wasted 5 minutes of all of our lives.

Johnson, without hesitation. The numbers don't lie.

Johnson had the same number of 100 yards games (4) in 2007 as Edwards, except he played in 7 less. Johnson had half as many TDs, in roughly half as many games. Also, he was roughly 440 yards shy of Edwards' total, which he would have eclipsed if healthy.

Edwards numbers will drop because the Browns drafted/acquired receiving offensive talent in TE Martin Rucker and WR Donte Stallworth. The Texans did not upgrade their receiving talent.

In the end, Edwards and Johnson are both proven WRs, but Johnson has one more year of experience in the league and a 100 catch season to his name.

The question becomes, can Johnson stay healthy? I'm not ready to label him injury prone because he had a bad knee one year. Let's face it: he's no Javon Walker. When Johnson can't make it through training camp or has consecutively shortened seasons (Ronnie Brown), I'll think about it. Until then, I'll draft Johnson ahead of Edwards because if he can stay healthy, he'll outperform Edwards weekly.

Andre Johnson, no doubt. he's got a proven track record, despite having a terrible qb (david carr), while Braylon Edwards only had one good year. Moreover, the Texans still don't have an established #2 (Kevin Walter only caught 51 passes because AJ was out). There's no reason as to why AJ is injury-prone either. Before this season, he's only missed 3 games.

I'm taking Johnson this year over Edwards. They have both had injury issues and put up good numbers when they are healthy. But I completely disagree with some of the other posters...

...I'm taking Johnson because the Texans do not have many other weapons. He may be double teamed, but the ball will be coming his way. With the additions the Browns have made, I can see Edwards being single teamed more...but also disappearing for complete games if the other weapons get hot for a stretch.

With Johnson, I know they are going to throw the ball at him...who else are they going to go to?
