Braylon Edwards vs. Andre Johnson

If it seems like I'm leaning on you guys more than ever while preparing this magazine, well, it's because I believe in the wisdom of the Pancake Blocks crowd. I love getting informed opinion to consider when making tough choices. It doesn't mean I go along with it all of course, but I do value it highly.

One of the toughest decisions I'm wrestling with currently is near the top of my receiver rankings. I won't say exactly where, but the battle is between Braylon Edwards and Andre Johnson. My gut says one thing, my numbers say another. They are both true game-breakers who have put themselves firmly among the receiver elite. But if you're on the clock today, who are you taking?

I'm taking Johnson.

What I like is that Johnson's production has been largely independent of the quality of Houston's overall talent (ie, there was none) where he strung together a series of good years, still with room to grow. Prior to 2007, both were on bad teams... but AJ consistently did better (though he does have 2 extra years of data) with an equal or lesser supporting cast. Both have had problems with injuries, AJ more frequently/BE more severe, so its a wash on that front.

My gut says that Edwards has hit his ceiling (which isn't to take away from him at all b/c it puts him in the top 5 discussion) while we have yet to see Johnson's best, which I feel could be in Randy Moss territory (60-851-8 over 9 games).

For me, Edwards has to put up another really good year before I'd consider taking him over AJ.

you gotta go edwards here. there is nothing u can really say against a pro bowl type player, who has just reached his potential. in a dynasty format he is gold. finally, a solid 3rd year receiver breaking out. u gotta love that, plus his qb is solid, if u like anderson or quinn... i think that group is better than houstons all around. good rapport, and a consistant focus of the offense. hes just too explosive. while johnson is too, i think this is the best your gonna see from him... although 100rec potential isnt bad, i go with the more upside.

Edwards. He's younger and he's less injury prone.

He also knows how to add to a panel discussion on sports blogs. You can't put a value on those intangibles!

I think that a lot of you forgot that Edwards blew out an ACL as a rookie. Sure AJ has had a couple of bad sprains that have cost him games (7 last year), but nothing career threatening.

Also, I think that the presence of Winslow acts as a solid #2 receiving threat (or is Edwards Winslow's #2?). AJ hasn't ever had a number 2 like that, so he puts up 100+ receptions but no double digit TD's (though he would have without the injury last year). Football is a team game and all, but when you have a guy with the talent to do it all by himself, the ceiling is far higher by default.

Johnson. While he has injury concerns (not that Edwards doesn't) he is the difference maker in the offence. If Schaub and he stay healthy, the sky is the limit. Edwards had a phenomenal year (especially TD-wise), but he shares the stage with Winslow (and will to a lesser extent with Stallworth). I also have less confidence this offence will surprise anyone. Is Anderson the real deal?

Andre Johnson without any hesitation. Edwards needs to back up his '07 stats to show me he can keep it up. Andre is a proven stud. Sorry Dan NFC East is toughest division in football...that whole second seed team winning the Super Bowl thing ya' know. Cleveland plays against the NFC East this year. Cleveland equals more bad weather games. Houston plays against 5 of the 8 worst pass defenses from last year.

I like AJ. He just has more pure talent than Edwards.

For the most part he is the lone standout on offense on the team and he has been doing it for a good while now.

Now that both Schaub and Rosenfals are solid QB's to throw him the ball, and there are some complimentary recievers and what could be a break out year by their running game, I think AJ is just waiting to blow up into elite numbers.

Edwards benefited from a solid offense last year and teams didnt expect them to come out and play like that early in the season when BE got a good chunk of his stats.
