Tough to Rank: Javon Walker

My first tough to rank post about Lee Evans was a rousing success, with most of you skeptical that Evans will rise above WR2/3 inconsistency. He was compared to Chris Chambers, Deion Branch, and Andre Johnson, with most responses indicating Fantasy Nation will be down on him going into 2008.

Today we'll look at Javon Walker, although I'm asking for commenters to take an extra step: Give Walker (and future players) a rough position rank: WR20, 35, etc. I'll let you know the averaged results.

My thoughts on Walker have been well documented, so I won't repeat too much. Even if Walker proves healthy, playing with JaMarcus Russell is likely to hurt him. Still, I can't ignore his ceiling. He could finish anywhere from the top-20 to outside the top-40 at wideout.

So where would you put him? Does Walker even get placed above teammate Ronald Curry or former Raider Joey Porter?

Before I say anything further, I gotta admit that I am a Walker dynasty league owner and thank him for the tremendous season last year. As far as this year, I think he'll put up 65rec, 750ydr, 5tds. So I guess you could rank that in the mid-20s somewhere. I'm disappointed in his surgeries/injuries but not as concerned with them as the fact that his team looks to rely heavy on the run and an inexperienced QB and somewhat slowed footed receiver can't be expected to put up Moss-Brady numbers in their first year together. Curry, essentially, can be put in that lump too, but of course at somewhat lower production. So I guess you can say, this year, the ceiling for any Raiders WR has gotta be 60-700-5. I can't see it bigger than that, or Walker's numbers ever reaching as high as they were in Denver. Unfortunately.

Too much risk. If I'm drafting for my last receiver in a 12 team league I'd take a chance on someone besides him so I'd say outside the top 36. Call it 40.

Will be drafted WR25 turn out to be a bust at WR60.
He will come in at about 90% no YAC, Russel won't be constant and he will tweak his knee and be done. Very little up side allot of down side.

Walker hasn't been the same since the ACL and, IMO, the move to Oakland continues the downward spiral. My rank depends on dynasty vs seasonal format. In seasonal I'd rank him at or below WR45, but if we're talking dynasty (and you have more time to sit on him) I'd push him up to WR35. The reasons are many: rookie QB, unsettled O-line, strong running game, no solid #2 receiver, and then there is the looming possibility of a micro-fracture surgery in Walker's near future. The guy still has talent, but too many to overcome in the near term.

Also keep in mind that when the season starts he'll be 29... Given his history, if he needs another major knee surgery, then I think you have to start looking at him with the same skepticism as a 30 year old RB coming of a second major injury.

...check that... I just realized that I listed Walker in the mid-20's. I ment to say in the mid-30's. 60-700-5 would never be considered mid-20's.

I would position Walker down around #40. I would like to bump him lower but I do think the upside still exists there. If he truly needed microfracture surgery, I doubt he would have been able to get a contract, even from a nut like Al Davis. However, he still has to show some explosiveness like he had pre ACL and he is now playing on a trainwreck of a team with a green QB and questionable talent on the offensive line and in the backfield. I'm guessing someone will chase him before I will based on name value.

Really cant put him higher than pick 37. (ie, not worth a week to week starting spot in a 3 WR league).

Yes he is the #1 receiver on a team. Yes he is paid like Randy Moss. Do I want him on my team? Not as a starter.

That said he has the potential for some good matchups. Raiders will likely be playing from behind and have a strong run game to lean on.

Its not like they had good QB's last year so I think putting Russell in at QB shouldnt hurt the WR spot anymore than it did Porter.

Porter last year: 44-705-6
I would give Walker about 52-800-7 as a fair bet.

That would have put him at #27 or so last year among WR's. I just think that there is very little upside and a ton of downside and that will push him down a tier.
