Tough to Rank: Vince Young

The last two players in our Tough to Rank series were Javon Walker and Derek Anderson. Didn't get too many specific numbers for Anderson, although I got the diverging opinion (Top-five to outside the top-ten) that I'd expect. People don't seem too worried about Brady Quinn.

Walker got a shockingly low average of WR 40.5, showing the Pancake Blocks reader's infinite wisdom. He'll get drafted in the top-25, but Rotoworld has him pegged much closer to his Tough to Rank score. Today, we'll look at Vince Young.

Young was a top-five fantasy quarterback when he started as a rookie, placing him on a fantasy magazine cover or two. He fell well short of expectations, largely because he didn't run nearly as much. His passing skills appeared to improve in the second half of the year, but not enough to raise him above mediocre QB2 level.

So how do we view VY entering year three? A bounceback candidate, a possible QB1, an average QB2, or someone to avoid? Remember to put a position rank in the comments!

I would rank him as an average QB2, lets say #16. I have found that with running QBs, their good games are harder to predict because those performances typically include a rushing TD. If waiting to take QB, I would rather take two prototypical drop-back passers and play the match-ups based upon weak pass defenses rather than try to guess which week VY will rush for 50 and a TD.

Grading this as 12-team redraft league with standard scoring. I'm not as optimistic as most of the guys on here. The way I see it, you're ranking not only VY on his skills, but the guys around him. While there is a lot of talent at WR, it's inconsistent.
No WR on TEN has shown that they can consistently be the guy. A QB needs to have at least one guy he can count on when things get tight. Doesn't even have to the #1 WR. Hasselbeck, for example has Engram, Brady has Welker, etc. Unless TEN somehow adds a good veteran WR, I can't see VY stepping into a QB1 level. Right now I put him at 17, mid-range QB2 territory.

I guess I'm lower on him than most. There are plenty of solid backup fantasy QBs and when I'm taking a backup, I tend to not reach because I want someone I know I can count on if my starter goes down. I would probably rank Vince somewhere around 17th among QBs.
