The McNair Effect

I didn't expect Steve McNair to start many games in 2008, so the fantasy impact of his retirement is minimal. Baltimore's quarterback situation is shaky, but no shakier with him gone. It's sad to say about one of the game's true warriors over the last ten years, but the Ravens are probably better off.

I do think this guarantees Matt Ryan doesn't get past the Ravens pick. Even if Baltimore doesn't actually want him, other interested teams (Chicago? Carolina?) will assume they do and try to trade in front of the Ravens if Ryan slips past Atlanta and Kansas City.

It probably depends on what the coaches think about Troy Smith's ability to take over at QB. I think they should give him a shot at it for this year and then draft a QB next year or go after Quinn if he doesn't work out.

Agreed!! Baltimore has many pressing needs although a QB is one of them. If Ogden retires I beleive that to be #1 unless the coaches believe depth will suffice.

Smith definitely deserves a shot. I think that, simply for the sake of depth, Baltimore needs a QB, but maybe somebody from the Ainge, Woodson, Josh Johnson tier in the 3rd round or later makes sense.

Farewell, McNair...

I'm a big believer in Matt Ryan. His amazing game-winning drive against Virginia Tech sealed it for me.

As badly as KC needs Offensive Line help, I will be very happy if they take Ryan.

That said, there is such an obvious trade in the first round that I'll be surprised if it doesn't happen -- as long as Atlanta passes up Ryan (which I expect), then Baltimore should trade up to #5 to grab Ryan. He fits their need perfectly.

Baltimore could give up their 2nd round pick for KC's third and maybe one of their 5th round to move up.

This way, KC would still be able to grab either Albert or Clady in the first rounder and they'd get a high second-rounder, while Baltimore would get the solid dependable future starter at QB they so badly need.
