Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 5
The fifth pick of our Mock draft creates the first shocker. It wouldn't be the first time the Chiefs surprised many with a first-round running back pick.
The Chiefs were hoping the Jake Long would fall to 5 but with the Raiders selecting him just ahead the Chiefs would try and trade out. Without a trade the Chiefs pull off the first shock of the draft and take Darren McFadden...
Obviously RB is a position of strength already, but with no LT, QB or CB that has value at this point the Chiefs throw everyone a curve. LJ is coming off surgery on his foot and KC and Herm love to run the ball. Herm could run the ball 600 times this season with pair like LJ and McFadden. KC would then target OL help in the 2nd and 3rd round. Herm would have visions of the Vikings amazing backfield last season and have an even better pair.
LJ is better then Chester Taylor and McFadden is better then AP. Also with King Carl's (shout out to PFT) comments on McFadden at the combine this pick is also a real possibility. Also KC would solidify the RB position for another 7 years; remember they had Priest Holmes when they selected LJ. And that worked out beautifully. LJ will be 29 this November and already has 1200 touches on his body and has had his ypc drop each of the last 3 years. Obviously some won’t agree but I think this is the best direction for the Chiefs and leave us with Croyle, Bowe and McFadden to grow together.

4. Oakland Raiders (Stephen G.) - Jake Long
5. Kansas City Chiefs (Jeremy S.) - Darren McFadden

I think the main point that is being made here is that if Jake Long is gone, this is the most likely spot to trade up to.

Wow!
I'd expect the Chiefs to go corner if Jake Long is off the board and I wouldn't rule out them reaching for a Ryan Clady here.

Sedrick Ellis would be my guess. The Chiefs have two notable DE's but no DT's of any consequence.
BUT, the Chiefs have done this sort of thing before with LJ and Priest... The difference I see is that their o-line was still in its prime when they doubled up on backs the last time. Either Clady, Ellis, Chris Williams or Otah make more logical sense since the Chiefs lack that sort of infrastructure.

Ellis would make sense at this pick or any of the three Tackles. When the Chiefs drafted LJ, it wasn't as much of a reach. They had the 27th pick and took him likely with the anticipation that Priest wouldn't be able to hold up for too much longer. But to draft McFadden at 5, giving him a lot of guaranteed money along with LJ's contract, it wouldn't make sense. LT, DT or CB makes sense...

Earth to Jeremy...come in Jeremy. Under what drug induced coma did you concoct the idea that McFadden is better than Adrian Peterson (unless you meant from Chicago?) This would be a good spot to get McFadden (i.e. before the Jets), but only a trade down makes sense. KC must get OL help.

I'm with Jeremy here. How do you pass him up? Go for O line with later picks. Good pick.

Interesting and provocative pick. Not the direction that I would go but I wont slam the decision. The backfield will be #1 in the league, so you cant deny that. Good job thinking outside the box and guess what? You cant discount KC actually doing it.
