Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 28

It looks like B. Roo wants to set the comments record for the Mock with this pick, No. 28 for the Cowboys. 49ers are on the clock.

Let’s get it out of the way up front and then give the explanation. Please hear me out before you flame me. With the 28th pick in the ’08 draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Brian Brohm- QB (Louisville)

First of all, let me say that if the draft actually plays out this way Dallas WILL trade this pick. I can’t do that here though. The Cowboys still have needs at WR and in the secondary. None of the WRs are first round worthy and the DB board has also been picked clean of first round talent.

When your needs in the draft require a reach to fill, you revert to Best Player Available, period. Brohm is already a better prospect than “one year wonder” Ryan that everyone else has going in the top three. That’s not the only reason this pick makes sense though.

Tony Romo has had an excellent regular season run for the past year and a half. Jerry Jones rewarded him with a long term lucrative contract because of that, but what has he done when it counts, in the postseason? So far, Romo seems to have a proclivity to blow big time opportunities and to lose focus when it counts. Cowboy fans were as perplexed as the rest of the nation when he decided to go gallivanting in Cabo with Daisy Duke before the biggest game in his life. A little competition would do him good and hopefully get his mind right about what Jerry and the fans expect from a $60 million man.

Right now Romo’s backup is the 80 year old Brad Johnson. If Romo goes down in the next two years, the Billion Dollar Jerryworld being built in Arlington will take a huge hit. That’s a big risk to take. Brohm could potentially keep them in the hunt for the Super Bowl and if he doesn’t beat out Romo then he could bring in a first plus more picks in the future ala Schaub.

this might be the worst pick of the draft. at least larry johnson is somewhat of an injury concern so possibly mcfadden could fill in, but this is just ludicrous. there are still late 1st round qualities here at (wait for it) WR, LB and CB, and possibly OL or DL if creative. this is just a case of believing this new hype going around about brohm being overlooked. a week ago no one would have even considered this. but whatever, its a mock.

Another weird Cowboys pick. Its like Jerry Jones is drafting these himself.

After passing on a WR or CB with the 22 now its also a pass on those same needs to get a backup QB?

Lots of quality QB's for that type of thing in round 2 or 3. Dont need to blow a first rounder on a slightly better backup QB than what can be had later.

I guess it wouldnt be the Cowboys unless it was controversial

Mayo is probably the only other guy that deserves first round money but the only position Dallas needs less than QB is LB. I would rather see them develop Brohm and have him ready if Dallas makes the playoffs this year and Romo gets hurt than spending the money on a guy that is undeserving. I believe in win now and its kind of a luxury but Dallas can get at least a first pick back for him next year when there might be someone to fill a need that's a legit first round prospect. I am a Dallas fan and I do like Romo. Jerryworld is used in the local media I never really considered it pejorative just descriptive. And I did say they should trade out. I had been salivating over Philips dropping to me all week as a replacement for Roy Williams. Dallas could drop back and take Tyrell Johnson in the second instead. Miami, KC, Atlanta and Baltimore will probably all make Dallas offers to take Brohm at 28 if he's there. Dallas will probably take two CBs in this draft in rounds 2-5 or they will move up to get DRC.

Now I have to figure out who the Pack is taking. I agree, with the basic assesment Brohm is way underated, and why not add depth to the most important position on the field.

Nutty pick......The Cowboys do have a lot more pressing needs...James Hardy or DeSean Jackson will be a neat pick with a lot of upside.....

Yeah, I probably would have gone with James Hardy here.

you are completely nuts!
