Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 28

It looks like B. Roo wants to set the comments record for the Mock with this pick, No. 28 for the Cowboys. 49ers are on the clock.

Let’s get it out of the way up front and then give the explanation. Please hear me out before you flame me. With the 28th pick in the ’08 draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Brian Brohm- QB (Louisville)

First of all, let me say that if the draft actually plays out this way Dallas WILL trade this pick. I can’t do that here though. The Cowboys still have needs at WR and in the secondary. None of the WRs are first round worthy and the DB board has also been picked clean of first round talent.

When your needs in the draft require a reach to fill, you revert to Best Player Available, period. Brohm is already a better prospect than “one year wonder” Ryan that everyone else has going in the top three. That’s not the only reason this pick makes sense though.

Tony Romo has had an excellent regular season run for the past year and a half. Jerry Jones rewarded him with a long term lucrative contract because of that, but what has he done when it counts, in the postseason? So far, Romo seems to have a proclivity to blow big time opportunities and to lose focus when it counts. Cowboy fans were as perplexed as the rest of the nation when he decided to go gallivanting in Cabo with Daisy Duke before the biggest game in his life. A little competition would do him good and hopefully get his mind right about what Jerry and the fans expect from a $60 million man.

Right now Romo’s backup is the 80 year old Brad Johnson. If Romo goes down in the next two years, the Billion Dollar Jerryworld being built in Arlington will take a huge hit. That’s a big risk to take. Brohm could potentially keep them in the hunt for the Super Bowl and if he doesn’t beat out Romo then he could bring in a first plus more picks in the future ala Schaub.

I was actually giving this some serious thought last year when Quinn was sliding. If he was available with the Pats pick, should they take him? He could get a year studying under Tom Brady after spending his college days with Charlie Weis, teams would have to love that right?

I don't think the pick is completely implausible -- Dallas could use a back up for Romo and could always develop and trade him like Matt Schaub or Brett Favre.

But the way this is written, I'm guessing you aren't a Cowboys fan.
Questioning Romo like that is like those goofy fans who criticized Marino for not winning the big one or Elway for not winning the Super Bowl (before the end of his career) -- not that Romo has accomplished what they have, but it seems like you've adopted the Talk Radio hater approach that was so applied to those guys before. . The other giveaway is that the "Jerryworld" moniker for the stadium seemed a bit pejorative.

I'd probably agree with your assessment regarding the WRs.......nobody on the board is a sure thing.

But, I have to think that Patrick Lee and Tracy Porter are solid enough prospects worth this pick considering the Cowboys need at that position. Both of those guys are projecting to be very solid Pros, long term starters.

I also agree that Brohm is being a bit overlooked, but I think considering the Cowboys huge need at CB, taking him over Lee, Porter and maybe another 1 or 2 CBs is a mistake at this point. I have to think the COwboys would be happy to get Lee in this spot. He could start right away.

While I appreciate your desire to be unconventional, taking a non-need here doesn't make much sense. If you want a guy who is going to sit for 4-5 years, you could probably get Colt Brennan/Andre Woodson/Eric Ainge in rounds 3-5. There HAS to be somebody (out of >200 remaining to-be-drafted players) who would help the win-now Cowboys out more.

Exactly Chad.

it's fine to take a flyer later on...heck, there are some guys who project to be pretty decent backup QB's.

In the first round, you need to find someone to help you win NOW. If not now, in the very near future.

Brohm is a luxury pick the Cowboys can't afford in the first round.

Interesting view but definately over- thought.

Although this mock is for fun, I cant see this pick happening. LOL!! But I may agree on Brohm being first round talent.

Awful pick.
