Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 27

I had the Chargers pick in our video Mock Draft (coming out tomorrow). I took Jerod Mayo. Justin K. disagrees)

The Chargers don't have many glaring weaknesses, but they only have a few picks in this years draft, so they must choose players wisely. I think the pick should be defensive, since all the noteworthy RBs have been taken. As the team stands now, they shouldn't have any difficulty winning their division. Their problem will be in stopping the passing game of their playoff foes, the Patriots and Colts. The debate is in how to do so. As of late it seems that you can win with a sub-par secondary as long as your pass rush is top notch.

The question now is to go with a DB or a pass rusher.

There is no doubt that in this draft (at #27) the best value is at the Linebacker position. I can't believe Quinten Groves is still on the board. Dan Connor and Jerod Mayo should be stellar pros. Unfortunately for San Diego, they just signed Shaun Phillips and Matt Wilhelm to a long contract extensions last year, so there doesn't seem to be room for any of these guys on their roster. I want to draft one of these guys, but it just doesn't make any sense.

I'll settle for Kenny Phillips. He can play spot duty until he takes over for Clinton Hart next year. It doesn't excite me thought.

Sorry Greg,
I said I wished I could pick him but there just isn't room.

I think most also agree that because of the lack of picks and because of the situation you described above, the chargers are a very likely spot for those looking to trade back into the first round to grab a slipping QB. Brohm perhaps?

Jake Long goes #1 overall to the Dolphins. Scott L. - pretty obvious Parcells agrees with me who is the best player available & safest pick.

Looks like pretty good value at #4 in our mock.

I think you just took the cowboys' next pick.

Uh, yeah, he just took the pick I had written up already. Jinxed myself.

The long term contract argument does not hold up. They just signed Clinton Hart to a 5 year extension. I've already heard talk about trading Matt Wilhelm. But, that's because the Chargers have Brandon Siler AND Anthony Waters on the roster who are both potential upgrades over Wilhelm and Cooper. I don't see room for an LB either, but not because of Wilhelm. If a significant upgrade is available he's always trade bait.

Although I'd prefer a CB, since Paul Oliver is versatile enough to provide depth at safety, I don't see one of value here (not even Brandon Flowers). I happen to like Kenny Phillips because he is versatile enough to play nickle CB if needed. So I actually think this is a good pick. I'd rather have an offensive tackle, but Gosder Cherilus is off the board and I'm not too impressed with Sam Baker.

P.S. At least I had a write up where I really wanted the guy and justified taking him rather than complaining about it.
