Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 26

My wife asked me last night what the point of a Mock Draft is. It was surprisingly difficult to come up with an answer, but I went with "entertainment value and you learn about the players." Saying it passes the time until next season would make sense too. With that in mind, Tony B. is up with the Jaguars

With Marcus Stroud being sent to the Buffalo Bills, Bobby McCray now a Saint, and Reggie Hayward a year removed from knee surgery and coming off of a relatively off-year, conventional wisdom says the Jaguars’ most pressing need is on the defensive line.

There is a nagging feeling in Jags Nation that they could have gone farther in last year’s playoffs with a more effective pass rush, and the New York Giants’ defensive success which hinges on terrifying and constant QB pressure, did not go unnoticed and only validates that thought.

However, if the Jaguars stand pat and don’t trade down, Cal WR DeSean Jackson may present an interesting conundrum for Jacksonville’s draft triggermen, if he’s available. While loaded (with bodies) at WR after the off-season acquisitions of Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson, Jackson would be an intriguing playmaking threat in the slot for franchise quarterback David Garrard, an attractive compliment to a potent running game, and an instant upgrade in the return game over Dennis Northcutt.

In 5 drafts since Jack Del Rio took over as head coach, Jacksonville has used 4 first round picks on offensive players. But in the end, Jags brass knows that if they want to go into next year’s playoffs as a division winner, they are going to have to get disruptive pocket pressure on their most vaunted divisional adversary, Peyton Manning.

That said, with the 26th pick in Pancake Blocks’ 2008 Mock Draft, The Jacksonville Jaguars select North Carolina defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer. Balmer’s size (6’5”, 308 lbs.) and strength (33 reps of 225 lbs.) gives Jacksonville’s front four much needed versatility and an ability to collapse the pocket. Under the tutelage of Pro Bowler John Henderson, Balmer could make an impact early on in his career and solidify a Jackonville defense known to be synonymous with stout.

Good thing you didn't put down DeSean Jackson. That would have been the most incorrect mock draft pick here, by far.

The Jags love big guys...and when they get small guys, like Maurice Jones-Drew, they are at least strong. No way they take that toothpick.

This might have been the no-brainer pick of this entire mock. There is really no one else left that makes sense here.

I like it. Hopefully it translates to shorter field and more TD's for MJD

The only reason the opposing defence doesn't stack the box against Jacksonille is because of Garrards 102. passer rating. Even with the recieving core having the bad case of droppsies all season long. Still with a high pass rating they only ended 17th in the league in passing yards. Porter and definately Williamson is not the answer for yards after the catch.

Excellent pick. Great value at #26 and fits a pressing team need.

No brainer.

Great pick.
