Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 13
Honors for the Panthers belong to Matthew W.
The Panthers have been marred in mediocrity for the past few seasons and need a solid draft to help bring them out of it. Some might argue the current staff needs a solid draft to keep their current jobs. The Panthers could go a number of different directions with the 13th pick of
2008 draft.
They could add a RB, such as Jonathan Stewart or Rashard Mendenhall, to pair up with DeAngelo Williams. However, I'm not sure the Panthers will want to use another first round pick 2 years after taking Williams in the first round. Now that Williams is no longer stuck playing behind Foster, the Panthers need to give him a chance to prove himself before using a first round pick on another running back. In a draft deep at the position, the Panthers can wait until later rounds to address the position.
The more pressing need for the Panthers is on both the offensive and defensive lines. The Panthers may look to add an offensive lineman, specifically a tackle, such as Ryan Clady, Jeff Otah, or Chris Williams (depending on who's available). They'll be looking for a tackle that can step in and start on the left side. On the other side of the ball, the Panthers need a defensive end to start opposite Peppers and to replace Mike Rucker. Last season, the Panthers were abysmal at getting pressure on the QB. They don't want to depend on Stanley McClover or Charles Johnson as a replacement to Rucker as neither showed much last season. The Panthers will want to add a pure pass rusher, such as Derrick Harvey, to bookend with Peppers and help bolster their defense.
That being said, I see the Panthers taking Derrick Harvey with the 13th pick if only because of their history of drafting defense in the first round (4 of last 6 drafts under Fox, 6 of the last 8 overall).

this is definately a solid pick. im kinda suprized he lasted this long. this would have helped me out tremediously on the Cardinals d line, but i cant wait to see the next two picks. still otah and mendenhall on the board. theres no way mendenhall lasts past those picks
