Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 4

Oakland seems like the first flashpoint of this year's draft. Al Davis could go a lot of ways here, and it will affect how the rest of the top-ten falls. Longtime friend of the program Stephen G has the honors.

With the #4 selection in the 2008 NFL draft the Oakland Raiders select: JAKE LONG, OT, Michigan

Possibly overused terms already, but simply put, Jake Long is the best player available and more importantly the SAFEST BET of all the top 5 picks (including Chris Long). Jake Long will be a franchise left tackle in the NFL for the next decade plus. He rates out on par or better than top 2007 Browns rookie Joe Thomas who was a resounding success last season.

Darren McFadden & Vernon Gholston were definite considerations due to their considerable upside, but both had question marks (McFadden - off field issues, Gholston - position/tweener and measureables more than production). Bottom line, McFadden would have been the sexy pick to excite Raider Nation for the short term but not the correct pick if the Raiders ever plan to surface above mediocrity.

The Raiders haven't had a franchise LT since Art Shell. And the protection of 2007 1st overall draft pick QB JaMarcus Russell is of utmost importance. Add in the offseason re-signing of free agent RB revelation Justin Fargas (1,000+ rushing yards in the new one-cut zone blocking scheme), the quality depth at RB (Rhodes, Michael Bush, etc.), and Jake Long is the obvious choice at #4.

2008 Pancake Blocks Mock Draft

1. Miami Dolphins (Scott L.) - Chris Long
2. St. Louis Rams (Evan Silva) - Glenn Dorsey
3. Atlanta Falcons (Troy Hill) - Matt Ryan
4. Oakland Raiders (Stephen G.) - Jake Long

This pick makes sense unlike all of the "experts" who keep on having the Raiders selecting McFadden. Didn't the Raiders just sign Fargas to an extension, sign Dom Rhodes last year AND draft Michael Bush. It's one thing to have a solid backup, but it's another thing to have a bunch of money invested in a RB bullpen.

Should the draft actually start out like this, it will be very interesting to see where McFadden ends up. I'm sure trade talks would heat up should he fall out of the top 5, but I'm not sure he's a lock to be selected at 6 with the Jets having Jones, Washington and Chatman on board already. Without a trade I suppose he could fall all the way to Cincy at #9.

Nice pick. Too much band-wagon predicting has gone on with this pick, justified by nothing more than the 'Al is crazy' line of reasoning. Long might give Russell the pocket time needed to develop into a decent passer.

I think McFadden falls to 7 where the Pats trade out (maybe to Dallas) for a couple picks plus a player like Bobby Carpenter. If he makes it past 7, maybe Carolina or Denver at 12 or 13 (barring a trade)... Zero chance Cinci takes him at 9 with the off-field stuff. The local media is having a field day with Chad Johnson and the Henry stuff hasn't even gotten rolling here, yet... Hopefully Henry and Odell Thurman aren't buddies.

The "experts" have the Raiders taking McFadden because they all think Al Davis is a dumba**. It remains to be seen whether they are right.

There's no way McFadden gets by the Jets. Thomas abolutely sucked last year. Chester Tayler had a great year and Minnesota took Adrian Peterson anyway. I think the Jets will follow that blueprint.

I'll tell you now people shouldn't be excited with this pick.
Raider fans should be wary about selecting any O-lineman in the first round. Also, Tom Cable relishes in the fact that he doesn't need the most talented lineman to make his line work. He needs someone that would fit the system. As far as O-lineman go, Clady is the best fit with the highest talent level, but he is not worth the #4 overall pick.
That being said, D-line is the area of need to be addressed. With both Chris Long and Dorsey off the board, Sedrick Ellis falls in. McFadden is a sexy pick, but Kiffin was right when he recently pointed out that they don't need him (but who really trusts what coaches say regarding the draft?).

Sounds like Crazy Al needs Stephen G. and Raiderjoe in the War room with him this year. The McFadden watch begins! I'm guessing he doesn't get past Jets either. If he does I wonder how long Gregg will ponder him at 7 instead of a CB? Pats could probably trade Maroney for a good CB if they got Run DMC. Talk about a D. Coordinator's nightmare.....

I think Atlanta would be best not to let him get past them, but it also makes sense for the raiders. A case can be made for Ellis as well, but if Oakland is going to be able to get Russell to develop then improving their line cant hurt lines.

This should mean teams will have to respect their run game that much more, and thusly afford Russell more time to make the smart plays that dont come as fast to 1st year QB starters.
