NFL Draft Liveblog

3:05: At least the Dolphins didn't take all ten minutes. Jake Long was welcomed to the AFC East with a chorus of boos. The seventh pick can expect the same. I'll keep updating this blog entry for a while rather than posting new entries each time. So refresh often! And check out our news page, where we'll have all the immediate reaction and analysis to each pick.

3:11: I hope the Rams took Chris Long because they think he's a better player than Glenn Dorsey. Not just because he fits their roster better.

3:15: Adam Schefter says Matt Ryan is the pick. Mike Mayock is right - this is not the safe pick. A world of pressure on his shoulder. Now will the Jets or Patriots try to trade up for Dorsey?

3:22: One good point on Chris Long is that Jim Haslett has a 3-4 background and will make him more versatile. That helps his value in St. Louis.

3:24: Feel free people if you are out there to debate these picks in the comments. I think Oakland passing up on Dorsey would be a huge mistake.

3:25: Matt Ryan is probably going to start sooner than later in Atlanta. Not great news for his long-term fantasy value or for Roddy White's 2008 value.

3:28: Oakland is done for the day after taking Darren McFadden. So I guess the LaMont Jordan era is over in Oakland. Not to mention Justin Fargas, Dominic Rhodes, and Michael Bush taking a big hit in value. The best rationale I can have is that Oakland needs playmakers, kinda like the Jets. And McFadden is the best playmaker in this draft.

3:32: The Saints are offering two ones and a two to take Glenn Dorsey. I guess the Patriots aren't moving up. I'd probably take that deal if I was Kansas City. Looks like the Shockey deal is off the board.

3:40: With Dorsey off the board, Vernon Gholston is the heavy favorite to be taken by the Jets.

3:41: Landing in Oakland isn't great for McFadden's '08 fantasy value. Their zone blocking will help keep his average very high, but he's going to split carries.

3:44: The draft went as poorly as possible for New England. No one fell. Maybe I should have believed the hype. Gholston is a boom-or-bust pick by the Jets, but who else were they going to take.

3:46: No uncomfortable fall here. All six players invited to New York went in the top six.

3:50: Pats will take Sedrick Ellis or a cornerback here I believe. I think Ellis is a great value, but I trust the Patriots enough that any cornerback that has their seal of approval is just fine with me. I remember doubting the Logan Mankins pick and that proved excellent.

3:51: Pats trade down with the top six going as planned. Well played.

3:58: I think the Saints/Patriots trade works for both teams. It's hard to find quality defensive linemen. Sedrick Ellis is a safe pick for them. New England likes two players, probably some combination of McKelvin, Branden Albert, and possibly Jerod Mayo. For moving down three spots to take their player, New England moves their fifth-round pick for the Saints third.

4:02: Mike Mayock has been on fire. He knows the picks and the trades before they happen.

4:03: Mel Kiper, meanwhile, is breaking new ground with grades immediatley after the pick.

4:11: Rivers in Cincy will be an IDP situation to watch. He has great potential to be the top fantasy rookie IDP player. But with Odell Thurman back, the MLB/WLB spot is crowded.

4:18: From Evan Silva: The Bengals now have 13 linebackers on their roster, maybe they will run a 2-5. Get some of those scrubby DTs off the field.

4:19: Leave it to the Patriots to have the first surprise pick of the day. They just value players differently. They desperately needed youth at linebacker and found a guy they love. I think the concern about the offensive line is a little overblown.

4:20: Bills get a dream pick with Leodis McKelvin. With his toughness, he is a great fit in a Cover two. Look for a lot of tackles from McKelvin, ala Antoine Winfield.

4:25: Broncos get the perfect fit as well with Ryan Clady. Jay Cutler is smiling.

4:29: Fantasy owners with high dynasty rookie picks have to be annoyed. Jonathan Stewart is going to be the thunder to DeAngelo Williams' lightning. For now at least, Darren McFadden will also probably split carries. Mendenhall could be the top rookie in the right spot.

4:33: Bill Belichick rocking the pink tie with a pink shirt as well as rocking long hair. Belichick mentions Mayo's intelligence and versatility multiple times.

4:38: Steve Mariucci says the Patriots will make a run at going undefeated again. Already with that?!?

4:44: Chiefs working the board. They didn't want to pass on the chance to grab Glenn Dorsey, now they move ahead of Arizona to take Branden Albert. A muched needed pick for their offense. He could move to LT eventually.

4:47: Big fantasy question now is where does Mendenhall go. Probably in the next three picks - Arizona, Detroit, Houston.

4:57: The Mendenahll fall continues. Lions come up with one of the bigger surprises by taking Gosder Cherilus to play tackle. The Lions pass on drafting a starting running back, while Arizona passes on taking a partner for Edgerrin James. The depth at running back, with quality guys likely available in round two, is working against Mendenhall.

5:14: Joe Flacco is a boom or bust pick by Baltimore. Sorta reminds you of Kyle Boller as a workout wonder, but he has the blessing of Cam Cameron, who I trust when it comes to quarterbacks. It's a different regime in Baltimore, and they may know how to develop a quarterback better. Looks like Troy Smith is going to stay a backup. Do you guys think he worth the move up?

5:18: What a deal by the Eagles. They got a 2009 first, a high second round pick, and a fourth rounder from Carolina. Jeff Otah fits the Panthers perfectly, but that's a move made by a regime (GM Matt Hurney/coach John Fox) that knows they are on the hot seat.

5:20: The fast pace makes our job a little tougher, but I love it.

5:21: The Bucs take a Bucs kinda guy - Aquib Talib. Devin Thomas and Mendenhall still on the board with Dallas coming up.

5:31: Tackle run reaches it's zenith with Sam Baker to the Falcons, who traded up. Not sure they needed to burn a second-round pick when they have so many holes. At least Matt Ryan has a LT to protect him.

5:38: Redskins give up No. 21, a third and fifth for two second round picks and a fourth. Fair trade, but amazing to see Washington picking up depth for once.

5:44: An ugly day for rookie runners' fantasy value reaches it's conclusion with Rashard Mendenhall to Pittsburgh. Could a round two pick by Detroit have more value than the rest? Jonathan Stewart might be the odds-on favorite to lead rookies in carries, and I doubt I'll project him over 250. Also an ugly day for my dynasty team with Willie Parker taking a monster hit in value. I thought about trying to deal him, but thought the Steelers would wait until round three. Laziness kills me again. Sigh.

5:47: With the tackle run over, and the best four RBs off the board, it's time for a receiver run.

5:50: So Mendenhall is a three-down back. Parker is good for a couple downs. Mewelde Moore is good on thirds. Najeh Davenport on the roster (although probably not for long).

6:10: Blog posts slowing down but we have your back on the news page. I'm getting some caffeine. Lorenzo Booker traded to the Eagles for a fourth-rounder. Very interesting. A Brian Westbrook wanna that can fit in nicely if Westbrook gets hurt.

6:23: No receivers selected still! Longest in draft history. It's almost Chad Henne and Brian Brohm time coming up here.

6:24: Haven't mentioned the Titans draft of Chris Johnson. I love his chances to be a quality third-down back but I don't see the value in the first round. At least they are admitting their mistake with Chris Henry. For a first-round pick, he has a low fantasy ceiling. Although Lendale owners can't be thrilled.

6:32: Miami is going to take their choice of Brian Brohm or Chad Henne should they choose without moving an inch.

6:33: The Jets are a nice spot for Dustin Keller. He won't be a fantasy factor as a rookie, but he can be a slightly more consistent Ben Watson-type player for them. Chris Baker is not long for New York. First round only took 3:30.

6:43: Dolphins must actually like John Beck. They just passed on Chad Henne and Brian Brohm for a first-round talent in Philip Merling.

6:45: Rams come up with the first ridiculous pick of the day: Donnie Avery is the first wideout gone. All track speed! Wow. Evan Silva, a huge Rams fan, comments: "I am overcome with anger."

6:57: Stunning pick by the Packers. Another receiver!? I love Jordy Nelson but he's a fourth receiver as a rookie. Donald Driver may be gone after 2008.

7:03: Great fit for John Carlson in Seattle! He could do just as much damage as Dustin Keller. Terrific landing spot for a young tight end. But like all rookie tight ends, you don't want him in re-draft leagues.

7:05: Kansas City just earned universal "A's" by getting Brandon Flowers after Dorsey and Albert. So Carl Peterson has that going for him.

7:07: No Jeremy Shockey movement. None of the receiver divas move. Lito Sheppard still in play perhaps, but not the big trades we thought might be coming.

7:10: I will check in here from time to time to talk about the skill players, but from here on out, I'm focusing on the the news page and working on a column for tonight. So the posts will slow down considerably. Thanks for stopping by and talk amongst yourselves.

7:18: And just as I say Im leaving, a former Defensive MVP is on the verge of getting dealt.

7:37: Tulane's own Matt Forte gets a best case scenario by landing in Chicago. Let's start the sleeper talk now.

7:49: We're almost at pick 50 and DeSean Jackson, Mario Manningham, Malcom Kelly, and Limas Sweed are still on the board. And Jessica, er, Jerome Simpson is gone.

9:25: The draft, which hsa been done for 30 minutes, wrapped up faster in two rounds than the first round alone last year. Thanks Commish.

Why not pick Dorsey and try to create an elite defense? Dont the Raiders have about 4 RBs already. I guess thats the Al Davis factor.

Now that the Raiders have McFadden, what are they going to do with all of their other backs?

I agree with Greg, the Raiders D has been getting killed and Dorsey (or even Golston) would have been a better pick.

I suppose it might make sense to some to have 2 consecutive top picks spent on a franchise QB and a franchise RB, but without the building blocks elsewhere, are the Raiders going to win more than 8 games in the next 5 years?

Agreed Gregg... Dorsey would have been the better pick for the Raiders.

The thing I find funny is all the "experts" on ESPN talking about what a great pick it is.

What does this do for his fantasy value in your mind Greg? Where would you place him among RBs in a dynasty league and where in a redraft league?

I know I took Gholston in the Mock for the Jets...but I'm not sure right now...I'd rather have a Corner I think...Damn, I'm not sure.

I think it hurts McFadden's value...rookie QB, mealy WR core...

But as a dynasty owner of Michael Bush I'm a little disappointed. I hope he gets cut and gets a chance somewhere else.

Gholston is a steal for the chiefs, no way they could have passed.
