Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 29

One general comment on this Mock if I may. I may. Almost everyone seems to want to trade or think their team will, but don't forget how difficult it is to find an appropriate pricetag and trading partner. Trade talk is a lot more common than teams who are confident enough to get it done. Now Josh F. will take it away with the 49ers pick

Wow. Sure is a crappy place to be drafting from after the lost season that was 2007. But at least it looks as if Joe Staley may have been worth it. The Niners have many needs but their three biggest are WR, OL, and someone to rush the passer. This pick is a very hard one to make. Lets break it down by need...

Best Case Scenarios for rooks

Mock Drafts are great, but they don't really look at the fantasy angle. In this week's mini-Fantasy Fix, I picked the best case scenario for the top trio of running backs in terms of fantasy value. Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, and Chicago are all good spots to go.

Since the video is only a minute, I didn't have time to go the receivers. I think the best case scenario for Limas Sweed would be Washington, where his phsyical presence could fit in well with a West Coast offense. Devin Thomas wants to go earlier, but Philadelphia would be a nice landing spot for him.

Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 28

It looks like B. Roo wants to set the comments record for the Mock with this pick, No. 28 for the Cowboys. 49ers are on the clock.

Let’s get it out of the way up front and then give the explanation. Please hear me out before you flame me. With the 28th pick in the ’08 draft the Dallas Cowboys select:

Brian Brohm- QB (Louisville)

First of all, let me say that if the draft actually plays out this way Dallas WILL trade this pick. I can’t do that here though. The Cowboys still have needs at WR and in the secondary. None of the WRs are first round worthy and the DB board has also been picked clean of first round talent.

Not Another Mock

While we wait for B roo to make his pick for the Cowboys, let's take a look at the back end of another Mock Draft. NBC's John Walters, Tom Curran, and I went through the top 31 picks. Picks 17-31 are up now, with 1-16 posting tomorrow. Sure, it would make sense to watch them in sequential order and wait until tomorrow to point people there, but I don't have the patience.

Draft Week picks up

What a day. Honestly I'm buried in other work (maybe taking this Managing Editor means way more responsibility. Hmmm ... ). But I can't pass up commenting on some of the big stories of the day. No matter how much my time is supposed to be spent on other things.

  • God bless Jeff Ireland if he was intentially messing with the media when he used the "pillar of defense" line. I still think he's just not experienced speaking publicly and it was a slip of the tongue.

  • I like how confident the Dolphins were that Jake Long was a left tackle. No doubt in their mind. They almost were incredulous at the line of questioning. I trust the judgement of Tony Sparano and Bill Parcells. And making Long the first pick as a left tackle makes more sense.

  • Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 27

I had the Chargers pick in our video Mock Draft (coming out tomorrow). I took Jerod Mayo. Justin K. disagrees)

The Chargers don't have many glaring weaknesses, but they only have a few picks in this years draft, so they must choose players wisely. I think the pick should be defensive, since all the noteworthy RBs have been taken. As the team stands now, they shouldn't have any difficulty winning their division. Their problem will be in stopping the passing game of their playoff foes, the Patriots and Colts. The debate is in how to do so. As of late it seems that you can win with a sub-par secondary as long as your pass rush is top notch.

    Depressing day for Chiefs fans

When quarterback is listed behind at least five other needs on the team. I don't buy it. They need to get an alternative Brodie Croyle before moving forward.

Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 26

My wife asked me last night what the point of a Mock Draft is. It was surprisingly difficult to come up with an answer, but I went with "entertainment value and you learn about the players." Saying it passes the time until next season would make sense too. With that in mind, Tony B. is up with the Jaguars

With Marcus Stroud being sent to the Buffalo Bills, Bobby McCray now a Saint, and Reggie Hayward a year removed from knee surgery and coming off of a relatively off-year, conventional wisdom says the Jaguars’ most pressing need is on the defensive line.

Get ready for Long week of puns

Tom Curran was up here at work today for a Mock Draft video we are taping, so I asked him about his report regarding Jake Long. Treating draft news skeptically this week is always a good idea, but that doesn't mean the report should be dismissed. The indications are strong and varied Miami is getting close. That doesn't mean they are close necessarily, but they are making sure that information is out there.

PFT's Mike Florio thinks it's all a smokescreen to get another player to jump, probably Vernon Gholston. We'll find out the truth this week, but don't assume it will be before Saturday. And then a week from now, we'll forget all about this. The beauty of Draft week.

And I've sent an email to the Jaguars pick owner, and have a backup in place if we need it.

    More Schedule Fun

Little late passing this along here, but I looked at the hardest and easiest schedules over at NBCSports.com.

I don't care how easy the NFC South is, getting seven homes puts New Orleans high on the list.
