The Plan

Evan Silva and I will post mid-term thoughts tonight. I will come up with a few fantasy winners or losers from veterans and probably post it in the morning. Then we'll be back with pick-by-pick analysis tomorrow morning.

NFL Draft Liveblog

3:05: At least the Dolphins didn't take all ten minutes. Jake Long was welcomed to the AFC East with a chorus of boos. The seventh pick can expect the same. I'll keep updating this blog entry for a while rather than posting new entries each time. So refresh often! And check out our news page, where we'll have all the immediate reaction and analysis to each pick.

3:11: I hope the Rams took Chris Long because they think he's a better player than Glenn Dorsey. Not just because he fits their roster better.

Berman references Youtube clips

When talking about the Bills-Dolphins game in Canada, Berman says that if someone gets hurt North of the Border, they can always take the magic Canadian pain-killers, as "anyone who watches Youtube in the last couple of months know." Nicely done. OK, back to work.

Don't fall for the hype just yet

Maybe the top four will really fall how ESPN is reporting (Long, Long, Ryan, McFadden), but I'd be wary of assuming anything today. Teams may still be sending out smokescreens and I expect a lot of surprises. I don't buy that Glenn Dorsey will fall to five, but we'll see.

Setting the Table

So I went to this Fantasy Sports Association event last night (A rare time I'm at one of these schmoozefests, which I'm terrible at), and surprisingly found some news on Brandon Jacobs there, with the help of buddy Ryan Houston from Fanball. A few players were in the house including Steven Jackson, Ryan Grant, and Jacobs. It was unclear if Jacobs ever had wrist surgery, but he definitely had no cast, and showed us the stitches on his hand he required from a cut. Looks like he's ready to go. And frighteningly large.

  • Love to write more about the event later, but here's my schedule for today, if anyone cares.

10:40: Long run. (Marathon training waits for no draft. Only five weeks left until the big day. Thank god.)

11:00-2:00: Chris Wesseling and Evan Silva monitor the news in case the Shockey deal or anything else breaks. It's starting to sound like Shockey will be a Saint.

Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Last pick!

A nicely timed capper to our week is the final pick of our Mock Draft. Check back here tomorrow around draft time and on the Rotoworld news page for the real thing. Rob, take it away ...

With the 31st pick, the Super Bowl Champion New York Giants select...

    Is Darren McFadden still available?

    Tough to Rank: Marvin Harrison

Okay, it's a little off-topic today, but we need something to post something while Rob dawdles with the Giants pick. (He says its coming and the Mock is basically over, so I don't mind.)

Marvin Harrison missed a total of two games between 1999-2006. In those eight seasons, he scored double digit touchdowns every season. Last year, he disappeared with a mysterious knee injury in Week 4 and basically never returned. Now he's 36. So where do we rank Harrison going into 2008? Right back in the top ten? As a WR2 with bust possibility? Or is he washed up?

He is someone that preseason reports will matter greatly, but we make two magazines before that. Would you put him ahead of Wes Welker? I have my ideas, but give me your position rank for Harrison below.

    Draft Eve

Almost there. Let's take a look at a few of the latest developments at the top of the draft.

  • I was stunned to hear that Jammal Brown was being offered by the Saints in a bid to move up to take Glenn Dorsey. Dorsey looks like a stud, but trading a third-year starting left tackle who has been an All Pro to move up eight spots? Brown is coming off a down year, and the Saints may not love his attitude. Honestly, this makes me re-evaluate Brown's value. They know more than we do. With that said, it seems like a good deal for the Rams. But they probably won't have the stones to take it.

    Tough to Rank: QB Battles

One thing I've run into when starting my projections for 2008 (which obviously will change a lot this weekend) is that there are more genuine quarterback battles than usual.

Even before Matt Ryan, Brian Brohn, Joe Flacco and Chad Henne hit the scene, here are some teams where it's tough to project projected attempts.

Jets: Clemens vs. Pennington (I started thinking it's Clemens to lose, now I'm actually leaning the other way)
Dolphins: Beck vs. McCown (Beck should be the guy right now, but can't project him for more than 350 attempts)
    49ers: Smith vs. Hill
    Bears: Grossman vs. Orton

Pancake Blocks Mock Draft: Pick No. 30

I had the Packers pick in our video mock and took Antoine Cason after considering Kentwan Balmer. Then I realized Balmer did very little in college and the Packers need a corner more. Kirby H. goes in another direction

The Packers in my opinion need help on the OL, QB, CB and possibly RB, depending if the staff is sold on Grant and Jackson (I’m not). TE is also a concern but Donald Lee seems to be at least adequate as a starter. OL the guards drafted the last couple of years have been ok and allowed to much rush up the middle against strong pass rushes. Corners are very good but old, and the Harris-Buress matchup may have been a disaster but I think it was one guy having a great day more than a sign Harris is done.
