Jones leaves huge hole in Detroit backfield

Kevin Jones was released by the Lions today, another reminder that top-five keeper league rookie picks aren't always gold (Hello Cedric Benson, J.J. Arrington, and Brandon Jackson). I'll get to Jones' past and future in another post, but first let's look at the situation in Detroit.
The favorite to start in Week 1 isn't on the roster
That's my opinion anyway. Detroit is going to re-start at the position in a deep draft for backs. They could draft a starter in round one or find someone to compete for the starting job in round two. Lions fans can only hope they don't go for someone like Shaun Alexander.
Don't count Brian Calhoun out
The Lions say they are high on Calhoun, a third-rounder from 2006 who has barely taken a snap as a pro because of knee injuries. He's a deep sleeper, but the Lions can't possibly trust Tatum Bell as a true starter The Lions will add talent, but a committee looks likely regardless.
Fear the RBBC
The Lions will only have so many carries to go around, and they will probably be divided up. Detroit says they are going to run more, but they are built to pass and may trail in games quite often. Unless they draft a franchise back like ReShard Mendenhall, I suspect no Detroit runner will be a top-30 fantasy pick.

Comments
First thing that popped into my head was did Tatum Bell know something we didn't know since he wanted out and then went and signed anyway.
I agree that they likely don't have a clue who the start is going to be yet they just knew they were not going tohook up to the Jones horse anymore.
