What the Patriots do now

I've heard arguments that the Patriots wouldn't have been the greatest team ever because of how close their final ten games were. I can understand that, and wrote a number of times in this space that they weren't much more dominant than their 2003 and 2004 teams because they didn't peak late.

With that said, they beat eight of 11 playoff teams during the year, including five in their final ten games. They were outplayed throughoutthe Super Bowl, yet had a chance to put away the game many times. They have roster improvements to make, but they don't need to blow up their system because of a three-point loss.

Here's what the Patriots should address this offseason.

Cornerback - Asante Samuel may be impossible to keep, which leaves them beyond thin at the position. The Patriots can scheme around a few average cornerbacks, but not an entire unit. There are some solid free agent corners, and New England should be in the mix for them. They also could use their top-ten pick at the position.

Wide Receiver - The only two receivers guaranteed to be back with the Patriots next year are Wes Welker and Chad Jackson. New England will be interested in bringing back Jabar Gaffney and should get that done. Donte Stallworth is as good as gone. Randy Moss could probably get more money elsewhere, but the Patriots can franchise him before getting a two or three-year deal done.

Linebacker - I've written this for two straight offseasons, and the group keeps getting older. Adalius Thomas finally made some plays in the Super Bowl, but asking for B+ efforts from Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau again is pushing their luck. The Patriots may also consider cutting Rosevelt Colvin, who is due to be one of the highest paid players on the team. If nothing else, they have to draft some players to develop. Their second-day tries at linebacker haven't worked.

Offensive Line - I put this only because there will be questions. After a miserable Super Bowl performance, people will want to blow up this line. But they played great all year, and are very solid at four positions. Improvement could be made at right tackle, and Matt Light could use an understudy, but one terrible day doesn't mean wholesale changes need to be made.

Tight end, running back, quarterback, and the defensive line could be tweaked at reserve positions, but don't expect to see major changes. They should also get a new punter.

Does this loss not seem earily similar to the colts loss of 2005 to pittsburgh?? Consider:

- Manning broke TD record that year
- Colts considered one of best offences of all time
- Loss was a huge upset and Colts had chances to win but couldn't put the game away
- After the game team was faced with O-line questions after the group was lauded for playing so well during the season
- The colts were in contention for an undefeated season well into it

The D is old. They're already mortal. The o-line is fine as long as they dont have to face the giants.

How high is Glen Dorsey stock after the DE's beat the shit out of The pats? Oh, and dont explain it away, the pats are the worst 18-1 team in history. They lost the only game that counts.

How about a kicker since they obviously they don't trust Gostkowski to make a 48-yard FG in a dome to go up 7 points in the Super Bowl...

Good point TC, (Ill assume not Tom Curran?). There are a lot of similarities, although I think that Colts game was more about scheme than the Pats/Giants game. Giants just were better on the line.

Donte Stallworth is still under contract for 2-3 more years, what are you talking about that he's gone?

"They lost the only game that counts." No, they didn't. Its that type of thinking that made the Dolphins win the only game that counted this year. Giants got lucky with bad calls and biased refs. Ask Goodell.

Donte Stallworth has a huge roster bonus that won't be paid making him a FA.
