Super Bowl XLII, Third Quarter
8:27: Patriots continue to go three or four wide every play. The Giants have mostly been rushing four or five.
8:28: Patriots offense looks much more crisp to open the second half. They are going to look to the middle of the field to counteract the Giants pressure.
8:31: Tremendous open field tackle by Antonio Pierce kills a Patriots drive.
8:32: Looking at the first half stats, it's amazing how well both defenses played. Other than Amani Toomer's 37-yard catch, which was well defended, very little went well for either offense. The Giants defense was mostly dominant, but the Patriots defense also stopped the run and limited Eli Manning well.
8:38: Belichick's challenge might have been the best in Super Bowl history. It should get them three points and extend this drive.
8:39: The Patriots haven't made the Giants pay for their mental mistakes much this game. That 13-yard play to Kevin Faulk means New England should at least get three extra points out of the drive. The Giants continue to make everything short and difficult.
8:42: So much for the three points. Michael Strahan sacks Brady, and the Patriots decide to go for it on fourth-and-13 instead of attempting a long field goal. Very surprising decision considering Gostkowski's range.
8:46: Kevin Faulk leaves th field with an apparent hamstring pull. That could loom large. Giants need to score to make the scoreboard match up with how well they are playing.
8:50: Eli gets sick of going short every down, but Plaxico Burress is triple covered in the end zone. Burress doesn't quite look right, and can't beat Randall Gay one-on-one the next drive.
8:51: Jeff Feagles has given the Giants an edge in punting today. Patriots are playing with six defensive backs on most downs. The defensive battle continues. Long drives with no points and we only have three or four possessions max left for each team.
8:53: Welker has the two biggest pass gainers for New England back-to-back in the game. Then Brady sprays one out of bounds. Something isn't right there. Brady loses his cool at a lineman, than a false start happens. If the game ended right now, who's the MVP? Welker?
8:55: Patriots had the ball for at least ten minutes that quarter, but couldn't score. Still, they played much better on offense despite the lack of scores. Brady has not been accurate overall, even on some passes he's completed.
9:03: Who would have thought this would be a field position game? Chris Hanson hurts the Patriots again.
