Super Bowl XLII, Second Quarter
7:03: Interesting first quarter. As expected, the defenses didn't really make much noise. But they slowed the offenses down enough to keep ths score low. It reminds me a lot of the Jaguars-Patriots game. Laurence Maroney is your first quarter MVP.
7:08: Ellis Hobbs on Plaxico Burress, and he knocks it out of his hand. The Patriots have to consider a huge win whenever that happens.
7:10: On Amani Toomer's incredible long catch, he was wide open early in the play, but Eli Manning hesitated. Toomer was well covered by the time the ball got there, but his receiver made an outstanding play. Concern for Patriots: They are getting no pressure on Manning.
7:12: Steve Smith was known for his hands, but he's had a lot of drops in the playoffs. He picked a bad time for one just now, as his drop was picked off by our main man. Ellis Hobbs, Channel 7 News.
7:14: Shades of the AFC Championship: Giants have two red zone trips for 3 points.
7:17: Huge job by the Giants to stop the Patriots running game on two straight short-yardage situations. Osi Umenyiora, not known for his run blocking, stopped that drive. Then Chris Hanson kicks a lame punt and Steve Smith's error was almost erased.
7:21: Giants go four wide and try a trap play, but Ahmad Bradshaw fumbled the snap. Not sure how the Patriots didn't recover that. Bradshaw did a great job getting that back. A lot of Patriots you aren't used to seeing - Pierre Woods and Le Kevin Smith - in on the early action. Not sure who's hurt for the Patriots, who have gone with six defensive backs quite a bit.
7:24: Tom Brady keeps throwing on the sideline in between series. A sign his ankle isn't right? Mike Selzic from MSNBC notes that Plaxico Burress also looks a little gimpy on his routes.
7:27: Lot of bad signs for the Patriots offense. The Giants are getting to Brady with a four-man rush. Justin Tuck just housed the interior line of New England. Stephen Neal came up lame on the play.
7:29: Patriots have 17 net passing yards through a quarter and half. Amazing they are winning.
7:30: The Boston Globe notes that the Patriots are liberally rotating their defense, probably because how long and draining the game is.
7:32: With the lack of speed on New England's defense, the Giants are doing the Patriots a favor by running Brandon Jacobs so much. Bradshaw is a long touchdown waiting to happen. The crowd has quieted down quite a bit here.
7:37: I don't want to give anything away here, but there is going to be some flashlight audience participation during "Won't back down" by Tom Petty. Try to contain your excitement.
7:41: More parallels to the AFC Championship. The Giants are outgaining New England by a mile in the first half, but the Patriots are leading. New England is giving up the short pass and making timely plays on defense. Amazing their defense is now carrying them.
7:42: Just a huge drive for the GIants defense here. They have outplayed New England, but giving up another score here would be demoralizing.
7:44: Gibril Wilson knocks down Brady. The Patriots are struggling to identify the Giants blitzers.
7:45: After a gorgeous play call and block by Wes Welker springs Donte Stallworth for a first down, Tom Brady gets hammered again. All the Patriots first downs are on clever playcalls, not individual plays.
7:50: Great job by Brady moving up in the pocket to avoid the pass rush before finding Randy Moss. Even on good plays, the Giants are getting to Brady.
7:51: Next play, Justin Tuck strip sacks Brady. That's the story of the game. Brady is getting absolutely killed. He had to get rid of it faster there.
7:55: Walking off the field, Tom Brady looked frustrated, almost shaken. He hasn't been hit that much all season. What an amazing job by the Giants defensive line. New England is also playing very good defense, but they have caught some breaks and are lucky to be ahead.
