Super Bowl XLII, First Quarter

6:30: And we're off. Flushbulbs a popping.

6:32: Giants go three wide on first down, four wide on third down. They get Plaxico matched up one on one with Randall Gay for their first down. They are definitely looking to spread out the Patriots early rather than attack them with the running game.

6:35: Giants are picking on Randall Gay. They get him matched up on Steve Smith (my pick for x-factor of this game) one-on-one for another first down. If you are a Giants fan, you have to love the confidence in Eli Manning.

6:39: Gay leaves the game and Rodney Harrison shaken up on same play. Reminds me of the Super Bowl against Carolina where Harrison and Eugene Wilson both got hurt. That was a huge reason that game the Patriots couldn't stop Jake Delhomme in the second half.

6:43: Eli's ability to move in the pocket helps him beat the Patriots blitz on third down. Great drive by the Giants no matter what happens. They've taken nine minutes off the clock. So do the Pats keep blitzing on third down?

6:45: The Giants settle for a field goal, but that was still a great start. They shortened the game. The Patriots didn't do anything defensively that should scare Eli Manning. Rodney Harrison did a fantastic job sniffing out the third-and-eleven play to end the drive.

6:48: The Patriots have an edge on special teams this game, and it's already been seen. Laurence Maroney, with a rare return, cut the ball outside when his blocking called for it to go up the middle. Patriots only need a first down to get in field goal range.

6:51: Patriots go five wide for the first time on second down after the running game picks up a first down. Randy Moss definitely had some room deep on the play before, but Brady unsuccessfully went deep.

6:54: Giants bring a blitz up the middle on third-and-three and Brady find Welker on a beautiful touch pass. New England is moving down the field, but they aren't trying anything deep so far. You wonder if Brady's ankle of the Giants pass rush is the reason.

6:57: Brady seems to be just a little off with some throws. Not hitting receivers in stride like usual.

6:58: Even when the Patriots are a little bit off, they get matchups that move the ball. The Giants had a linebacker on Ben Watson in the end zone, and he was lucky to draw a penalty. Only two drives in one quarter. Score one for the under.
