Hiring Mora now makes no sense
The Seahawks introduced Jim Mora as their 2009 head coach today in one of the most head-scratching moves of the offseason. Mora's final two seasons in Atlanta were disasters and Seattle wasn't going to face competition for his services next year. What's the rush?
Like Pete Carroll with the Patriots, Mora specialized in the sort of cheerleading and back slapping that rarely works for long in the NFL. His player-friendly approach was popular in the locker room, but he spent half his time as a head coach putting out media fires, many of which he started. He seems to be a good defensive coach, but his units in Atlanta were mediocre to poor.
His final two seasons in Atlanta were calamitous. 2005 Falcons fell apart late in the season, losing four of their last five games (and six of eight), to miss the playoffs. A 44-11 loss in Week 17 had some questioning Mora's job security only one year after he won a playoff game.
The next season was even uglier. The Falcons lost seven of their final nine games, starting the streak with inexplicable losses to league doormats. Mora's teams reflected their head coach: emotional and inconsistent.
It's great that Mora helped out Seattle's secondary last year, but Mike Holmgren's West Coast offense isn't going to be the same when The Big Show leaves. The Redskins have already hired Holmgren's likely offensive successor - Jim Zorn.
The years of expecting automatic production from Seattle's skill position players is nearing an end.
