Vince Young: Offensive coordinator killer?
One of the worst-kept secrets surrounding the 2006 draft was that Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow wanted to draft Matt Leinart over Vince Young, and most believed that coach Jeff Fisher felt the same way. Owner Bud Adams, a Texas native, wanted Young and got his man. That's an awkward way for any coordinator-QB relationship to start, and its inevitable end came Wednesday when Chow was fired.
Chow made some interesting comments, wondering if Young was behind the decision.
"Obviously Jeff didn't think that I could (make it work with Young). I thought I was. That's the thing. I don't know ... but it's going to take some patience ... He sensed some frustrations on my part with Vince. So maybe it was Vince? I don't know. I am not too concerned with finding out why. It doesn't matter.''
Chow wasn't dealt a good hand. His running backs were average, and the receiving group perhaps the worst collection of talent in the NFL. With that said, Chow's complex passing attack may never have been a perfect fit for Young and Jeff Fisher, who loves to play ball control. Fisher is also probably only making the move because he knows former Titans coordinator Mike Heimerdinger is available.
'Dinger caused a stir a few years back when he left Tennessee for the Jets in a lateral move, but all has been forgiven. He helped shepherd Steve McNair into superstardom, and seems like an ideal candidate to do the same with Young. Chow is a good coach, but I suspect Vince Young is better off getting a fresh start.
