Rivers status still a mystery
I watched most of the Friday Championship press conferences. While Tom Brady was surprisingly introspective, but really the only news was going to come from San Diego.
Philip Rivers returned to practice Friday, but only took a third of the snaps and is listed as doubtful. While the designation is a surprise, Norv Turner, Rivers, and LaDainian Tomlinson all expressed more optimism than you'd expect that Rivers will play. Turner said he didn't see a big difference between 'questionable' and 'doubtful', whatever that means. Rivers will try to warm up before the game, and they will take it from there. I still expect him to wind up playing.
Rivers says the injury isn't a huge deal because he's not that mobile anyway, but winning in Foxborough at less than 100% will be tough. He doesn't have that strong an arm, and two injured knees will make it tougher to throw deep. And while Billy Volek played great last week, playing that well all game will be tough.
He had a terrible cameo in San Diego's first Tennessee game, and has never faced a Bill Belichick defense. I suspect Rivers will be out there Sunday. If he could stay in the lineup, I think the Chargers will beat the spread and keep the game close. If Rivers is out or gets hurt, I don't expect a rout.

I have to agree that having one injured knee, let alone two, will make it very difficult to throw an accurate deep ball. That may make a bigger difference than people think due to the fact that the only "over the middle" recieving threat the Chargers have is Gates, and it is still up in the air whether he'll play. Don't expect LT to pick this team up and carry them to the superbowl on his shoulders.

From a future fantasy football perspective, if Rivers does indeed have a partially torn ACL, he will most likely require an ACL reconstruction in the off season. As we all know it can take up to twelve months of rehab to get back to 100%.
