Don't Blame Herm

Herm Edwards can be criticicized for a lot of things, time management being first among them. But those who picked on him for running Kolby Smith on fourth-and-one in the fourth quarter instead of attempting a field goal weren't watching the game.
Smith was the entire Kansas City offense, and he had converted three out of four short-yardage opportunities on the day. Dave Rayner, the Kansas City kicker, missed a 33-yard field goal in the fourth quarter by as much as you can possibly miss an unblocked field goal. And the Kansas City defense had no answer for Justin Fargas in the second half; they couldn't even stop him when they knew the Raiders were running out the clock.
Taking all those factors into account, Herm made the right decision. It just didn't work.

Im glad somebody said this. Im glad Herm stepped out of his box. As Angela said in The Office "sometimes you just need to grow a pair"

Wait a minute. You're saying that decisions should be made in the context of all the information that is available at the time and not from a set list of rules? You'll never make it at ESPN or SI with that kind of thinking!

will the NFL please stop helping the broncos by not announcing about travis henry? i'm sure their weekly opponents would appreciate knowing which rb they should prepare for. are the broncos that tight with the NFL ppl who count that they can string this along for 3 months? opposing defenses never knowing who they'll face?

i don't disagree with herm's decision to go for it on 4th-and-1 in that situation. but let's not downplay his awful decision-making that lost all momentum and put his defense on the line.
first he wastes a timeout because he doesn't know what he wants to do, then he loses another timeout by challenging the spot. after this five plus minute delay, with the raiders d regrouped and the chiefs offense in disarray, he plunges smith up the gut for a loss. and having burned two timeouts in ten seconds, he puts his defense on the spot, and they can't get it done. but the two extra TOs would have given them another chance.
lots of blame to go around on this one, but PLEASE don't give herm a pass, he's been getting too many passes for too long. he's a terrible coach, and has hired a terrible staff.
obviously, i'm a chiefs fan :)

I fully agree with JonO. The decision was right, but the wasted timeouts and challenge leading up to the decision were classic Herm.

A Scorned Jets Fan

I absolutely disagree about Herm's call. I was watching the game and I couldn't believe he made that call to go on 4th down. Its not about growing a pair, its about using actual strategy to win the game. Sure Rayner missed the 33 yarder but doesn't mean he's going to miss the next one. And the field goal at that point was within decent range, probably a 38 or 39 yarder. Thats what they pay professionals is to make field goals from that distance. If Herm had such little confidence in Rayner at that time he shouldn't have been on the team. Plus you have to go for the tie. There was a little under 5 minutes left it the game at that point. Herm must have assumed they would get the ball back. Well Fargas continued to run the ball well and ate the rest of the clock. Coaches have to give their team a chance to win. By not going for the field goal he robbed his team from at least having a chance to win.
And as for the Broncos, no the league isn't babying them at all. The NFL has to make sure that they have all the information and are ready to make a decision before they get their behinds sued or set a precedent for all future drug issues. Its ok for the Raiders not to know who the Denver RB is going to be, its not like the Broncos know who their QB is going to be. True me, if the NFL was for some reason favorable to a team because of what town they are from it certainly would not be Denver.
