Notes: Hardly anything changed on the list after another week of the status quo. Thanks for the memories, Ronnie. Maybe you won’t be the same after a torn ACL, but for one half-season you were the robo-fantasy monster we’ve all been waiting for. Some extra points are awarded for good draft value, but not much. Players with games in hand from byes (like Edwards and Westbrook) get an edge.

This Week in Multimedia

The PFT Podcast is up. I have no idea if people are listening to this, but I think it would make my brief career if someone actually listened to this on the way home from work like I used to with the old Florio and Dante podcasts.

  • It's safe to watch The Fantasy Fix again: Tiff is back. She'll be there Sunday for the live show.

  • We have a Rotoworld chat scheduled at 2PM.

Henry taking it easy before suspension

Travis Henry owners might have been better off with him suspended the last few weeks. After a fast start with the Broncos, Henry was held to 116 yards combined against the Chargers and Steelers. Sure, the competition was tough. But there was a time that Denver could run through anyone. Those days, already waning, may have ended when the team lost C Tom Nalen for the season.

There are a couple other factors at play here.

    1. Denver's weak rush defense is keeping their offense on the field. Denver is 13th in rush attempts-per-game despite a run-heavy approach; Shanahan's teams are usually in the top-five.

    2. Henry hasn't caught a pass since Week 2. Selvin Young is a better option on passing downs.

With Henry at less than 100%, don't be surprised if Young gets more involved this week. And with a difficult matchup against the Packers, don't be surprised if Henry has another lame afternoon. I'm going to downgrade him in the rankings after thinking more about it.

    Top 21 Running Backs

You guys asked for it, so here goes my top-21 running backs the rest of the way. As a special bonus, I’ll include the top-21 current running backs in Rotoworld’s Season Pass package. Chris Wesseling does a great job with these rankings. I did mine without looking at Season Pass, and we have pretty similar list. I’ll leave without comments for now because working on some things for tomorrow.

    Edwards decision sounds permanent

Dick Jauron quietly seemed to adjust Trent Edwards' status as the team's starting quarterback from temporary to permanent this week. The Buffalo News calls it a foregone conclusion.

I watched the Bills game against the Ravens and mostly agree with FootballOutsiders' gushing about the kid. When he makes a mistake, it tends to be a massive one. But otherwise his mastery of the two-minute offense and good decision-making is impressive. He also stretched the field in this game.

Don't forget for a second how hard it is to be a rookie quarterback. Even Tom Brady was very limited in his first season as a starter, and that was his second year. Payton Manning had a 6.5 YPA and a negative TD:INT ratio. Eli Manning and Alex Smith could barely walk and talk at the same time.

Edwards may or may not be much better than J.P. Losman right now, but he definitely will be next year.

McCown back in mix in Oakland

I wrote about Daunte Culpepper's struggles earlier in the week, and Ryan Wilson at ye ol' Fanhouse backed up my lazy speculation with some geniuine numbers. There haven't been many worse quarterbacks in the league this year.

And what do you know? The Raiders are considering a change according to John Clayton.

    LaMont losing work

The surprising jobshare in Indianapolis will get more attention, but another team may have started to lean committee this weekend. With LaMont Jordan struggling for a second straight week, Dominic Rhodes had nine carries to eleven for Jordan.

Rhodes played the third series of the game, and then the fifth, and a similar pattern continued in the second half. It’s uncertain if Rhodes would have received so much work if Jordan was getting yards. Both players failed to top three yards-per-carry as Oakland’s offensive line struggled for the second straight week.

One of the reasons I like Jordan, especially in PPR leagues, is that he puts up numbers even when he plays poorly. In this game he got 29 rushing yards, four catches, and 40 receiving yards for 10.9 fantasy points. His receiving numbers build in a margin for error, but he’s going to struggle to be a top-15 fantasy option if Rhodes continues to cut into his workload. Let's see how next week goes before drawing any conclusions.

    Colts inch back towards committee

Joseph Addai owners looking forward to his return Monday night didn't enjoy what they saw: Kenton Keith playing early, Kenton Keith playing late, and Kenton Keith stealing a touchdown. Keith wasn’t just coming in for specific situations, rather taking whole series at a time.

Addai was a Fantasy MVP candidate a few weeks ago, but that will be tougher to maintain if he’s in a jobshare moving forward. That’s what I expect to see.

    What If?

As part of the buildup to Monday Night Football, ESPN's Ed Werder recounted a conversation with Tony Dungy about Maurice Jones-Drew. Dungy said that Indianapolis was all set to draft MoJo last year until Jacksonville took him two picks earlier.

Dungy said the Colts were shocked that Jacksonville took Drew, because they usually take such huge (tall) physical players. The Colts settled on CB Tim Jennings, but imagine how sweet a backfield of Addai and Drew would have been. And how it would have crushed Addai's fantasy value.

    Raiders passing game is basic

Daunte Culpepper plays just well enough to get the Raiders beat. Most of Sunday, he looked like an inferior option to Josh McCown, which is tough to accomplish. He then exploded for a two-play, 80-yard drive, giving the Raiders hope, before retreating into a shell again.

I do a double-take every week when I look at Daunte Culpepper's stats. They aren't so bad. I've talked about this with Aaron Gleeman, a Culpepper expert; the numbers always end up better than you remember. The box score doesn't show the ball being held too long or all the bad decisions.

The Oakland passing game, to put it nicely, looks basic when Daunte is playing. Teams have stopped respecting the pass, and load the box to stop LaMont Jordan. There are big plays there, but they haven't hit many of them. His mobility isn't close to all the way back. Gleeman said that Culpepper wouldn't be starting if not for his history of success in the league. I agreed, until I thought more about the Oakland depth chart. If the Raiders had options, Culppeper wouldn't be in the starting lineup in the first place.

This message was brought to you by the partnership for a better Ronald Curry
