The Saints are back; 49ers not so much

I have been cautious about proclaiming the New Orleans "back" until we saw some consistency. Scratching out a low-scoring win at home against the Falcons didn't exactly inspire confidence.

With that said, I just watched the Shortcuts from the Saints-49ers game and could not have been more impressed. While Alex Smith played one of the worst quarterback games I've seen all year, Drew Brees played one of the very best against a secondary that has been playing well. Some of this may sneak into Goal Line Stand tomorrow, but here's what I noticed.

Best Halloween Costume

This year's award goes Jon Kitna, who dressed as Lions defensive line coach Joe Cullen, the man who drove through a Wendy's drive-thru naked. There's even video.

Before you steal the idea, the joke may not play as well outside of a Lions team function. Heck, it may not play all that well there.

That's all for Wynn

Running out the door, but a couple quick thoughts on the day's news. DeShawn Wynn still has a chance in the NFL, but the constant injuries make him unreliable. He will be in the mix for work next season, but nothing is guaranteed. At least he showed more than Brandon Jackson. And Ryan Grant just went from a very good pickup to a great one.

* Matt Schaub is likely to miss this week's game, but I'd hold on to him in most fantasy leagues. They were third in the NFL in YPA heading into last week. Once AJ is back, Schaub will be a top-15 quarterback.

* Early Week 9 rankings are up on Season Pass. Tiffany and I taped another Fantasy Fix.

See you tomorrow.

Waiver Ranks

Fargas just won't go away

Patrick Dahl knocked out Waiver Wired today, so I thought I’d give some quick thoughts on the likely pickups this week. Here’s how I’d rank the running backs ...

1. Selvin Young – His receiving ability, in addition to some nifty footwork, could make him special. As a starter, he’s a RB2.

2. Ryan Grant – What a no-nonsense runner. The Packers have wanted him involved all along, and he quickly climbed the depth chart considering he was acquired so recently. Vernand Morency isn’t going to be the starter, and DeShawn Wynn can’t stay healthy. There is better upside here than people think. He could turn out to be a nice RB3.

3. Brian Leonard – Might start again, but has been mediocre.

Somewhat Early Bust Watch

We skipped the bust watch last week, so there have been many changes. Congratulations to Drew Brees and Reggie Brown for getting off the list because of their performance and to Matt Jones because I’ve forgotten about him.

Monday Night Prediction and so much more

I tried picking the Monday night game a few weeks ago and it went pretty well. So let's try again. I don't trust Denver because I see a different team each week. Let's go with Green Bay in a tight one: 27-24. It should be a fun fantasy game to watch with Selvin Young and DeShawn Wynn trying to make names for themselves.

Chambers off to good start

The numbers from Chris Chambers' debut don't leap off the page: two catches, 35 yards, and a touchdown. But in the context of Philip Rivers' 11 pass attempts, Chambers' day doesn't look so bad. He had five pass targets, with three for Antonio Gates, and one for Vincent Jackson. Chambers also got behind the defense once for what would have been a long touchdown, but Rivers missed him.

It's only one game, but it's a good start for Chambers in San Diego and discouraging news for Jackson owners. I would still play both Chambers and Jackson next week as WR3s because of the matchup against Minnesota.

Rankings Changes

* The main questions heading into Sunday include Marvin Harrison's status, Travis Henry's ability to play, and the starting running back in Cleveland. Henry and Selvin Young owners are stuck in a tricky spot with a Monday night game. Here are the barely readable changes to the Week 8 Rankings. The changes are explained at Pancake Blocks.

Quarterbacks: Ben Roethlisberger up, Brian Griese up, Jon Kitna down, Philip Rivers up, Shaub down (game-time decision), Vinny Testaverde on the list.

Running Backs: Steven Jackson down a tad, Marshawn Lynch up. Travis Henry is way down. With a Monday night start, I don't see how you can use him unless you own Selvin Young as well, It's not an easy matchup, but Selvin owners who don't own Henry could consider him as a flex. He'd be a RB2 with Henry out, but I doubt we'll know what's up until Monday.

Maurice Jones-Drew is down, Jamal Lewis is down. I don't see much of a difference between Lewis and Jason Wright, so Wright would have roughly the same ranking as a starter. Frank Gore went down, Derrick Ward is off, Reuben Drougns is on the board. Dominic Rhodes and Vernand Morency are down, while Ryan Grant is on the board.

Wide Receivers: Packers receivers are up, Steve Smith is up, Marvin Harrison is way down, and Anthony Gonzalez is up.

Tight ends: LJ Smith is on the board, David Martin is off.

Update: Harrison is out. At least his owners know ahead of time.

Across the Pond

Think England doesn't care about the NFL?

Our friends at FootballDiner.com disagree. They are an England-based NFL fan website and are all over the Giants-Dolphins game with more original photos (including a rare Tom Coughlin smile) and interviews than Rotoworld has put together in five years. Kudos.
