Skinny Posts: Raiders vs. 49ers

Skinny Posts is my look for the stories beneath the box score while watching preseason game tape

Raiders vs. 49ers

* Dominic Rhodes has 13 carries for 28 yards in the preseason. LaMont Jordan (8-67-1, 1-19-0) is the bigger back, but he can make people miss. He made a lot of people miss in this game, ala 2005. He looks lighter. He showed power running over Jeff Ulbrich on the goal-line. He cut against the grain, improvising quite a bit. Rhodes just doesn't offer a varied game.

* I think Andrew Walter (9/16-78-0-1) has a better chance to start than Josh McCown. His first two drives ended on mistakes by his teammates (drop, bad snap). He had an ugly interception, but also a 17-play TD drive. Oakland's offensive line had a great day protecting all the quarterbacks.

* Ronald Curry makes plays on his own after the catch. Not sure if Jerry Porter does, haven't heard much from him this preseason.

* Travis Taylor played ahead of Mike Williams, but Williams was brought in twice when Oakland got near the goal-line. He's a goal-line wideout and almost made a great grab on a jump ball, but was ruled out of bounds. Williams looks like a lineman though. It was hard to tell who was bigger: Williams or Daunte Culpepper.

* Culpepper's game (6/8-75-2-0) wasn't nearly as impressive as his numbers indicated. His two fumbled snaps from center remain a problem, but mostly he just wasn't asked to make any tough throws. Everything was short, and most of his yards came on a broken play - a 44-yard score to TE James Madsen. And he almost missed that wide open throw.

The best thing Culpepper did was make someone miss in the open field. Not that he looked like the old Culpepper, but he looks better than 2006. Still, I don't think Lane Kiffin learned that much from this effort overall. Culpepper should get a start this week. If it goes well, he'll probably start in Week 1.

* Vernon Davis is being used in motion a lot. He was featured on the first play and made Michael Huff whiff. I'd be afraid to tackle him too. Of course, I'd be afraid to tackle Lane Kiffin.

* Darrell Jackson has quietly had a healthy training camp. He looked like his normal self early in the game.

* Ashley Lelie made two catches while playing with Alex Smith, then two more deep ones with the second team. Another decent game and he'll be the team's third receiver, as he was penciled in when he signed.

* Alex Smith has been the most impressive quarterback I've watched in the preseason. It's not just the consistency, it's the difficulty of throws he's making. Great accuracy and underrated arm strength. I was skeptical he'd make a big leap again, but he's making me a believer. And he's the same age as Brady Quinn.

I'm doing one of my favorite "industry" drafts at 7PM tonight: The SOFAleagues run by the Huddle. I may try to liveblog some thoughts.

Thanks Gregg. The one thing that stood to me was your take on Alex Smith. I hadn't expected him to be that impressive. Very interesting.

A lot of good point on Da Raiders but you failed to mention most of the positives for Jordan and the offensive line came against a 9er D-line that used ZERO of their starters.
