Chiefs-Browns Notes

Croyle losing starting job?

It's a quiet news day, so let's empty out the notebook before the second week of the preseason starts. I was looking forward to this game because these teams have true quarterback battles. It's mid-August, and it's legitimately a 50-50 call for both teams. This game didn't help.

Chiefs vs. Browns

* This game was Charlie Frye in a nutshell. He played better than Derek Anderson, but made two crushing mental errors that erased his progress. A poor pass he threw to Jerome Harrison was actually a lateral and returned for a touchdown. He tried to run for a touchdown at the end of the first half and time ran out, costing his team three points.

He made some nice scrambles and throws, but he makes a lot of errors for a quarterback once compared to Bernie Kosar, the king of managing the game.

* Anderson was hurt by a key drop, but he made a couple of ugly throws. He's had a big opportunity this month, and hasn't grabbed it. Big game for him this weekend.

Preseason Notebook, vol. 2

Does Lemon have a chance?

I broke out the preseason notebook Tuesday with the Falcons/Jets. Let me know if this is the type of thing you guys like in the future. Here goes a few notes from the Lions-Bengals and Jaguars-Dolphins.

Jaguars-Dolphins

* Miami's young offensive line was manhandled by Jacksonville. It was like they weren't there. Trent Green had some ugly throws, but no one would have played well. This could be a rare case of the preseason showing something if the trend continues. If Miami's line gets pushed around like this all August, I'd consider downgrading Ronnie Brown.

* Cleo Lemon threw a few beautiful passes, but they were against third-teamers. He needs a monster game this week for a chance to start, but he's still a big long shot.

Bulluck ready for payback

It's rare to hear truly threatening trash talk in today's NFL, but Keith Bulluck provided some true bulletin board material for the Patriots on Tuesday. Too bad it's only the preseason.

"It is only a preseason game, but No. 87 (Caldwell) needs to keep his head on a swivel, that's all I've got to say ... He is probably the sixth receiver, so I don't even know if he'll be in when I'm in. There are no personal vendettas or anything like that, there is just one person in particular that sticks out in mind. If he is (in the game) I'll know. Trust me."

$63,000,000,000

The most ridiculous thing you'll read this morning is the $63 billion lawsuit against Michael Vick.

Here's my favorite part ...

McNabb set to return

After the wall-to-wall coverage surrounding Carson Palmer's ACL recovery last year, it's a little surprising that Donovan McNabb's rehab has remained beneath the headlines.

But McNabb's debut performance this Friday against the Panthers is a huge moment for McNabb. And frankly, for fantasy leaguers.

Raider Nation: Bush, Jordan, Williams

Plenty of goodies Tuesday from the indispensable Raiders blog with Jerry McDonald.

1. Members within the Raiders believe Michael Bush will ultimately be placed on injured reserve. It sounds like the PUP list to start the year is a near certainty. We wouldn't waste a flier pick on Bush at this point, even in deep leagues.

2. LaMont Jordan had a good day of practice, and appears to be back to full health after missing ten days of work with a back injury. With Bush out and Dominic Rhodes suspended, Jordan knows he has a chance.

Revis signing coming?

Jets fans might have some good news tonight.

Update:Looks like Revis is signing. Here's the post I wrote ...

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum spoke on ESPN Radio Tuesday night, saying that the team has made significant progress with first-round pick Darrelle Revis.

The agents are in the Jets building, and Tannenbaum said they will work on hammering out the contract tonight. He didn't want to make any guarantees, but he's hitting the media circuit and it appears that the two sides have agreed to terms. Tannenbaum lauded Revis' agents for some "creative solutions.

Breaking out the preseason notebook

One of the reasons I wanted a blog, other than the gigantic picture of my face, was it could be a place to share some notes from watching game tape that didn't make a column. So here goes installment from the games last weekend. Tell me if this

Falcons vs. Jets

* Atlanta opened with four wideouts and had at least three on the field on most of their downs. There were four wideouts on the field very often. One wonders how this will affect Alge Crumpler when healthy. It can't help. Bobby Petrino showed a ton of different formations for the first preseason game.

* Roddy White was targeted on the first three passing plays, and six times in the first half of the game. Including an incomplete bomb. Joey Harrington looked like he had just won the Super Bowl after the first two completions. Michael Jenkins and Laurent Robinson shared slot duties.

White burned me last year, but I wouldn't be surprised if he leads the Falcons in receiving yards, Not sure if that's worth drafting, though, except in deep leagues.
