Craig Davis starts in three WR set

Already an update on Craig Davis, our number one player we're watching tonight. Floyd started in a three wideout set, along with Malcom Floyd.

It's a reminder that Floyd could rotate snaps with Davis early in the year. Floyd did show some potential when he got playing time last year, so he can't be totally discounted. It's a situation to watch this month.

Update Davis was targeted on San Diego's first play from scrimmage, a first down where he came in motion. Nice to see him featured in the offense.

Don't call him Craig

Breaking News from San Diego: Craig Davis wants to be called "Buster" from now on. But there is a Buster Davis playing linebacker in Arizona, also in his rookie season. Yet another reason not to draft him.

What I'm Watching

We won't get to see LaDainian Tomlinson or much of Shaun Alexander tonight, but there are a few players to keep a close eye on during the Sunday Night Seattle-San Diego tilt. These aren't all sexy storylines, but preseason action is for the diehards.

1. Craig Davis- San Diego is expecting this surprise first-round pick to step up into a starting role with Eric Parker hurt. There are mixed scouting reports on Davis, but he has impressed in camp when healthy. Like most rookie receivers, we're skeptical about his value in fantasy leagues.

2. Hackett vs. Burleson - D.J. Hackett has earned the starting job opposite Deion Branch with his strong play the last few years. But former Viking Nate Burleson has reportedly had a strong camp and is challenging for snaps. Hackett owners shouldn't worry too much, but Burleson could wind up taking playing time from slot man Bobby Engram.

3. Third Running Backs - Both these teams are thin at running back, and it's uncertain who will claim the third running back spots. Darren Sproles needs a good preseason to keep his NFL career going for San Diego. Leonard Weaver and Marquis Weeks are battling for the Seahawks.

4. Young backup quarterbacks - Charlie Whitehurst for the Chargers is trying to show growth in his second season so he can pass Billy Volek on the depth chart for good. If David Greene of the Seahawks shows something in the preseason, backup Seneca Wallace may play more at other positions.

5. Diamonds in the rough - This are important games for unheralded receivers. I've heard Legedu Naanee from San Diego has some impressive physical skills. Courtney Taylor and Ben Obomanu have some long-term potential in Seattle.

Worst three words of preseason: Out for Year

Week 1 of the preseason is almost up, and that means we're getting some injury news back.

Bengals backup RB Kenny Irons was the only draft-worthy player knocked out for the year this weekend, but some big losses were felt at other positions.

The Cardinals lost two starters, OLB Chike Okeafor and RT Oliver Ross, for the year. Okeafor is one of Arizona's better defenders and Ross' injury exposes a thin offensive line.

Texans SS Glenn Earl is also out for the year. That won't help Houston's chances of improving their pass defense.

We'll be back when NBC's coverage starts up at 8.

LiveBlog Tonight

Plenty of thoughts on this weekend's preseason action, but that will have to wait for Monday. Tonight I'll be liveblogging the Chargers-Seahawks game on NBC. Stop on by around 7:30 PM Eastern.

Draft Guide Downgrades

Make sure to check back Sunday night, when I'll be liveblogging the first NBC game of the year. Because that's who pays the bills.

* Brandon Marshall wouldn't return to practice on his own, so Mike Shanahan made him. While it's great to see Marshall get on the field and play well, his quotes in the article indicate he's got some maturing to do.

* Lastly, here are some of the players who were downgraded in the draft guide this week ...

Draft Guide Upgrades

I have been knee deep in draft guide updates this afternoon, trying to make sure we update our projections, outlooks, tiers, and top 200 lists all at once.

Before I leave you for the weekend, find out why Kyle Orton is afraid of squirrels, and check out my Draft Guide Upgrade lists after the jump.

Kenny Irons Injury Impact

Can Rudi fail now?

The Bengals were concerned enough about their sagging rushing game to invest a second-round pick in Kenny Irons. Now they are back at square one. Let's look at the fantasy impact of Irons' ACL tear.

First, it's a devastating blow to Irons' dynasty owners, who rightly saw him as a high-ceiling long-term prospect and as Rudi Johnson's likely successor. The Bengals don't know what they have in him now.

Rudi Johnson may be starting his decline, but this injury cements his top-ten grade. As we've written about all summer, the Bengals were planning to take carries away from Rudi Johnson if he didn't improve his efficiency. Irons was set to take third-down snaps from Kenny Watson, and probably more early down snaps from Johnson than Rudi's owners expected. Now Johnson should get to his 330 carries by default.

Browns Luck

I don't blame Browns fans for thinking they have bad luck. This franchise absolutely has had terrible luck since re-starting the franchise, especially since Romeo Crennel took over.

You almost have to expect Willie McGinest to have injury problems, but losing key backup linebacker Matt Stewart for the season is a big blow. Their depth will be tested. Couple those injuries with prized free agent recruit Eric Steinbach's knee strain, and using a coin flip to decide the starting quarterback, and it's beginning to feel like more of the same surrounding the Browns.

Linked: New Fix, Column

Tiffany and I are back with another Fantasy Fix. We talk about Clinton Portis' sinking draft stock, Marshawn Lynch's value, and whether Shaun Alexander is overrated.

* While I'm self-promoting (seriously, the gigantic picture of my head on the NFL page is scary and too much), here's a rare column I'm actually happy with: Projected Carries for all NFC running backs.
