Friday Preview

Moving on up
I'm preparing to post Tiers of Heaven on Friday, but there's a catch. We're only going to post the running back tiers for free on the site this year, but the rest will only be available on the draft guide.
This was a tough decision, one I would never make on my own because it's our most popular column all year. I want it out there, and fought to get the running backs up there for free. But I can't argue with my boss that our draft guide pays for all the free news and columns we provide every day. Until it becomes Rosenthalworld, it's ultimately not my call. I suspect most readers of Pancake Blocks buy the thing anyway.
We'll talk about Kevin Jones on Friday, but here's a quick list of the players rising and falling in the tier analysis before posting tomorrow's running backs. And yes, the tiers will be updated constantly until Week 1.
Climbing
Joseph Addai - less downside than Parker and LJ.
LenDale White - Hop on board.
Tatum Bell - Still not high enough to wind up owning.
T.J. Duckett - Will also benefit from Jones absence.
Anthony Thomas - Should reach 100 touches. Barely draftable.
Jerome Harrison - Should carve out a small role.
Falling
Larry Johnson - No one at Rotoworld would draft him fourth. So he can't be fourth.
Clinton Portis - Been discussed here.
Marshawn Lynch - Slight move, but my division of carries was too imbalanced.
Kevin Jones - Probably not worth the risk.
Vernand Morency - Can't make the fantasy club from the tub.
Musa Smith - Mike Anderson ahead of him for now.
DeDe Dorsey - Some questions about Colts backup status.

Comments
I respect your decision to make the tiers a pay column only. I just hope this doesn't signal the beginning of the eventual movement of all this site's great stuff into the pay universe. One question, does that mean that the weekly tier ranking that came out on Friday will be on the pay side this year as well? And while I'm on the subject, whatever happened to the guy who write the betting column in 2005? He's the one who told us who was a strong/weak bet against the spread and how many "units" to use. I'm sorry to bother you with all these questions, I just have no idea who the most appropriate person to ask is.

Greg, I hate to say it but I agree with your boss make 'em pay. I didn't subscribe to your site last year but followed it very closely. Listened to your radio shows and even called in a once. I've listened to other fantasy "touts" and find your advice the best in the busines. Heck I both money pools I was in last year. I subscribed this year and find the info fantastic. I say make people pay why level the playing field.
That's my two cents, keep up the great work!

Free is the most popular word in the world according to linguists....but they don't have to pay the bills and build a company now do they? The info that you guys provide for us is probably read by some of the NFL player-personel people for it's unique performance-based perspectives. $20 bucks or so is such a fair price to pay for what you've proven to provide already...

If we are going to pay, then it would be nice to be able to see all the comments at one time.
Also, I don't mean this in a bad way, but if there weren't real pictures on each page it would make for easier viewing.
I've been here the last few years because it was the only worthwhile site that was free. That was really nice, but - understandably - the party had to end sometime. I don't mind dropping the $25.

Thanks guys. I'm working on getting the comments page fixed so you don't have to keep clicking.
Jacyln, our weekly rankings in season will always remain free always, as will all our regular news and daily columns. This column was a little different, basically a summary of our draft guide and magazine.

I agree with the choice to make it pay. Otherwise those that pay start to feel like why am I paying when all the important stuff is free anyway haha. Not that I really mind paying for it.

Gregg,
I've been a loyal reader for some time, and this isnt the first time you've heard from me (especially in the off-season, when things are a little less hectic, you've written back a couple of times). I have one major issue with turning the Tiers into a pay-only feature.
Given a choice of purchasing either one, I bought the Beckett/Rotoworld magazine instead of purchasing the draft guide. Sure I prefer in some small way to have things in print, but I would not have made that choice if I didn't believe between the main site and your blog that any necessary updates would be available to me. Now it feels you have abandoned the purchasers of the magazine.
I'll acknowledge I haven't been cover to cover in the magazine yet (my NL-only team is in the money and has held my attention much later into the summer than it normally does), and so it is possible I may have not noticed you offering "updates" to purchasers of the magazine, much like many of the other magazines tout. If that is the case, I apologize and look forward to them. However, if that is not the case, please understand that a dedicated reader, occasional message board poster, and frequent Rotoworld-link-forwarder is really disappointed and feels let down by this decision. Come 2008 my magazine purchase decision will be much more difficult than in the past two years.
