Top 50 Position Battles: Packers third wideout
# 39. Packers third receiver: James Jones vs. Robert Ferguson vs. Ruvell Martin vs. David Clowny
All three candidates for Green Bay’s third receiver job are off the radar, but there is plenty of upside at this spot. Greg Jennings still has to prove himself as a number two receiver. Brett Favre should be among the league leaders in attempts and needs people to throw to.
Jones is the favorite to secure this position long-term and eventually challenge Jennings. He’s a possession threat in the mold of Anquan Boldin, but has to make the adjustment from San Jose State. The early minicamp reports have been positive.
Ferguson has survived five seasons in Green Bay despite diminishing returns and increasing injuries. Favre likes him and he has enough experience to produce if he gets a chance. He was putting up WR3 numbers through seven weeks in 2005 before he got hurt. Martin caught 21 passes last season as a first-year player, included a 118-yard effort against Chicago’s reserves in Week 17. He showed some ability downfield in his two starts. Clowny is a fifth-round pick and is even rawer than Jones. He’s a long shot.
The Packers probably want one of their young guys, Jones or Martin, to win the job. Ferguson will need an outstanding camp to keep his job. The winner here is worth a look in deeeep leagues and could be an in-season waiver pickup.
