The Schaub era begins

The imminent acquisition of Matt Schaub by the Texans makes sense, but it's still a huge risk for Houston.

They are betting big money and draft picks that Schaub is significantly better than David Carr. Don't forget that Houston will ultimately have to eat a huge cap hit to trade Carr only a year after paying him a large option bonus.

Schaub is a great-looking prospect, but he's thrown only 161 career passes. He has a 6.4 yards-per-attempt average in those appearances, with six scores and six interceptions. He's a prototypical West Coast offense quarterback with more mobility than you'd expect. Schaub is an unknown quantity, but Gary Kubiak may have felt he didn't have time to develop a rookie.

I was impressed that Atlanta extracted two second-round picks (one in '07 and '08) from Houston, plus moved up from the tenth to the eighth pick in the draft. It was a homerun deal for a team that is committed to Michael Vick and would have lost Schaub in a year anyway.

The size of this compensation, plus the impending contract extension, proves that the Houston starting job is for Schaub to lose, no matter what Gary Kubiak says in the future about a competition with Sage Rosenfels.

In fantasy leagues, Schaub is intriguing. Keeper league owners have to be smiling, but redrafters shouldn't get too excited. There's no reason to gamble on Schaub until late as a QB2 pick. There are plenty of seasoned veterans who will be around that have better supporting casts than Kevin Walter as a number two receiver and Ahman Green at running back.

Now we move to the David Carr watch. The dude may get so depressed that he cuts off all his beautiful hair again.

Minnesota seems like the most likely trade partner, but coach Brad Childress says he doesn't want a veteran. Cleveland is a possibility if they decide not to draft Brady Quinn or JaMarcus Russell. Oakland and Miami are two other teams who may be looking for a quarterback. Green Bay, Detroit, and Baltimore are three other teams I can think of that could use a "quarterback of the future."

Carr is the only quarterback that Houston has ever had, but he will shortly be the quarterback of Houston's past. It can't come fast enough for most Texans fans.

The Texans have addressed two needs this offseason; RB and QB.

Didn't they have a shot at Young, Bush, Leinart, Cutler. Hindsight may be 20-20, but how can the fans accept the 06 Young snub now that the Carr era is over?

I like Schaub, but probably for all the wrong reason. I think the interest he generated last year and this year is what has me believing he MUST be good.

I dont mean to side-track, but here is something I don't understand. If a team consistantly drafted a postion badly (read Detroit; WR) why does anyone assume they will "learn from their mistakes." If the Raiders toss their #1 pick to Russell, why wouldn't the Lions take the freakishly gifted athlete, sports-writers-be-damned!
