Seattle doing it the wrong way
Seahawks fans can't be encouraged. Seattle appears to be wasting the most money of any franchise this off-season.
Today they signed Marcus Pollard, 35, to help fill their void at tight end. That's a step backwards, no matter what role he plays. The Seahawks also spent huge money on Deion Grant, an average safety that two teams have given up on. Brian Russell is another journeyman safety they picked up, although we don't know the terms of his deal yet.
Seattle's big-ticket signing was Patrick Kerney, another over-30 player who will cost All-Pro money to play below a Pro Bowl level. He helps replace Grant Wistrom, an exceedingly similar free agent bust from only three years ago.
Even the Seahawks' non-signings were odd. They were willing to make Daniel Graham one of the highest paid tight ends in the league before he chose the Broncos. They were willing to give Kris Dielman $7 million a year after refusing to pay the same money to Steve Hutchinson last year.
Seattle doesn't have a first-round pick this year because of the Deion Branch deal last season. The organization seems content to throw huge money at every position of need on the roster, regardless of who's available. Perhaps they are gearing up for one final run with Shaun Alexander and Mike Holmgren around, but that attitude is a recipe for disaster in the salary cap era.
