Lagging Lewis
I completed my first draft of tight end outlooks, rankings, and projections for our magazine this week. I've said this the last two years, but it's still true: The position is deeper than ever.
Solid veterans with some upside like Desmond Clark, Dallas Clark, and Daniel Graham had trouble cracking the top-15. High-upside sleepers like Eric Johnson, David Martin, and Alex Smith were around No. 20.
One player who I had a hard time projecting was Jags second-year TE Marcedes Lewis. He was a first-round pick with good hands and tight ends often experience serious improvement in their second year.
Lewis, however, didn't show much as a rookie. George Wrighster is another catch-first tight end on the roster and Jacksonville's passing game has a lot to prove. I originally projected Lewis for 35 catches, 370 yards, 3 scores, and a ranking outside the top 20 tight ends.
And all this was before Jermaine Wiggins signed with his old coach Mike Tice and joined the Jaguars.
Now I don't know what to think. Lewis is still the favorite to get starter-worthy snaps, but this doesn't help his projection. In a year when there are so many other tight ends with defined roles, I'd just stay away from all the Jaguars.
