Jerramy's neighbors have spoken

Any team still thinking about signing Jerramy Stevens might want to read this article.

Sounds like a candidate for a one-year deal in July by the Bucs.

Friday Morning Links

While it depressingly snows outside my window only 24 hours after it was 60 degrees out, here's a few links from the Friday newspaper commute...

  • Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch makes a great point in today's paper. After adding Drew Bennett and Randy McMichael for a possible $41 million, St. Louis has five receivers who caught at least 45 passes last year. With Steven Jackson in his prime, their offense should be ridiculous if the line holds up at all.

On the other hand, they haven't remotely addressed their 31st-ranked rush defense. This could lead them to reaching for a defensive tackle in the first round of the draft. Sounds a lot like the Mike Martz era, doesn't it?

    Curtis makes his choice

On a day when Randy Moss was supposed to dominate the headlines, Kevin Curtis sprinted through the backdoor and stole the show.

Frankly, it was about time. Curtis won the Plaxico Burress Memorial Award for taking a ridiculous amount of free agent visits while firing his agent during the process. Curtis may be the fastest white guy in the NFL, but he won't be rushed into a decision.

In the end, he made a great choice. Sure, Curtis doesn't have the chance to be a "number one" receiver like in Tennessee or Minnesota. But he would have be an ill fit for that role anyhow. Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb will know just how to maximize Curtis' speed in a receiver-friendly offense.

    Campbell, Moss, and You

Just wrapped up our off-season Football Fix for the week, with alternate versions depending on whether Randy Moss is dealt today or not. It sounds like a matter of time before it happens, but I'll hold off on the repurcussions until it's official.

    Wednesday afternoon links

I'm not sure how I feel about our baseball preview videos being prefaced by a Queen Latifah makeup ad. Oh yeah, I feel awkward. Here's a look at the starting pitchers. Don't hold it against me that I don't know what I'm talking about.

  • Welcome to New England. On a usually soft introductory phone call, Donte' Stallworth was asked about his college feud with Kelley Washington. Then he was asked about his substance abuse problems.

Washington, meanwhile, was made fun of because he was too complimentary of the Patriots. Michael Felger of the Boston Herald writes ...

Seattle doing it the wrong way

Seahawks fans can't be encouraged. Seattle appears to be wasting the most money of any franchise this off-season.

Today they signed Marcus Pollard, 35, to help fill their void at tight end. That's a step backwards, no matter what role he plays. The Seahawks also spent huge money on Deion Grant, an average safety that two teams have given up on. Brian Russell is another journeyman safety they picked up, although we don't know the terms of his deal yet.

    Narcissism

For the readers that have been jumping on the blog early, consider this a warning: It will be quieter than I'd like over the next two months as life and work collectively encroach.

I'm always uncertain how much of myself to throw into this blog. On one level, my favorite blogs are newsy, no-frills affairs like Seahawks Insider and Reiss' Pieces.

On the other hand, I'm entirely too self-obsessed and want to differentiate the blog from our news page.

Here's my deal. I get married in less than two months, and we have the most last-minute wedding possible. Maybe everyone is like this, I have no idea. But I know I need a suit to wear. I'm the editor-in-chief of our football magazine, which is impossibly due on the week directly after the NFL Draft. Coincidentally, that's also the week of my wedding. I also move in two weeks.

Throw in the regular news, the videos (check out the 8 baseball previews we're taping this week by the way), and there's a pretty good chance I'm going to flip out or spontaeously self-destruct by May. Our GM Rick Cordella said he's putting me on the 'busts' list of employees for 2007. That hurts.

The preceding, of course, is a long way of saying I'll post here almost every weekday, but not as much as I'd like. Just so you know.

    Just missed ...

I posted my top 40 running backs for 2007 in today's column. Let me know where you disagree. The Cowboys and Ronnie Brown were the toughest to rank, but I think this is the most tightly bunched group of RB2s and RB3s in memory.

Here were the players that just missed my list and why ...

    New McDonald

Shaun McDonald's signing with Detroit won't make huge headlines, but it could land him on Rotoworld's 2007 sleeper list.

A fourth receiver in St. Louis, McDonald had only 13 catches in 2006. But under Mike Martz, he grabbed 83 passes for the Rams between 2004-2005. That's 82 more receptions than Mike Furrey had over the same span in St. Louis, when Furrey was stuck playing defense a great deal. It's possible McDonald could start over Furrey given time. He's quick and Martz seemingly would like to use Furrey in the slot. Even if McDonald gets less snaps than Furrey, he is someone to watch.

As Martz showed with Furrey, he can make nearly any receiver who knows his system into a fantasy threat. The Lions now look less likely to sign Kevin Curtis, which is unfortunate for his keeper league owners. Shaun McDonald may end up stealing his fantasy mojo.

    Donte' a short-term fix

I wasted a lot of time Sunday writing up the minutia of Donte' Stallworth's contract. Some writers tried to make the case that New England could pony up $9.6 million in bonuses for 2007 if Stallworth played at a Pro Bowl level, but even his agent admits it's a one-year deal.
