Good new segment on NFLN

Total Access has been featuring a new segment in the off-season featuring a back-and-forth between the voluble Jamie Dukes and NFL Films Senior Producer and NFL Matchup guru Greg Cosell. It's quickly become one of my favorite segments on the Network.

Why you ask? Both of these guys, especially Cosell, actually watch tape (gasp) before spouting off an opinion. And that gives them the confidence to call a spade a spade.

On Nate Clements' signing Dukes called, him "Maybe the 15th, 16th best corner in the league." Cosell said they are "paying for the position," but in no way is Clements an elite player. How come we haven't heard that much elsewhere? Clements' reviews were kind compared to the following.

On Leonard Davis, "He doesn't have good feet... He's average ... Now you are going to make him change positions and play right guard or right tackle and expect him to play at an All Pro level. That rarely, if ever, works."

On Derrick Dockery, Dukes called him, "An Ok football player." Cosell said that tape revealed Dockery to be " a middle of the road offensive guard... The fifth-best offensive lineman on the Redskins... just not that good a football player... There have always been questions about his work ethic. "

Reading between the lines, some of the Washington papers last week seemed to agree.

On the Redskins' signings, London Fletcher was called a "slightly above average middle linebacker." While true, it was a position of need for the Redskins so I'm not sure that's a bad thing. Fred Smoot was predictably called an "average NFL corner."

The reviews were at least mixed for Dewayne White. Cosell pointed out that White's Week 17 game, in which he beat Walter Jones inside and outside, made him a lot of money.

Adalius Thomas was the only player to get unanamously glowing reviews. Both analysts called him the biggest impact player of the free agent period.

Junkies should keep an eye on Cosell and Duke's segments this off-season for a little EA Matchup style analysis.
