Rice Redux

Eating brunch alone, on a break from 'work', reading our baseball annual while the hipsters on each side regaled each other with tales of Saturday night, I couldn't help wondering how many of these dorky obsessed Sundays are in my future. I can imagine my boss Rick thinking, "Plenty, I hope." My wedding is about two months away, and with it, possibly something closer to balance on these gray winter days. We'll see.

Back to the men in shorts. I wrote earlier that Sidney Rice's forty time did him no favors. But this report indicates he had a great day catching the football. Perhaps the first round isn't out of reach after all. That second tier of wideouts will be fascinating to watch.

Perhaps the biggest surprise Sunday came from Arizona RB Chris Henry. The man is a 6'0, 230-pound fullback/tailback hybrid without much production in school. He ran a 4.33 forty at 230 pounds! Most observers thought Henry came out too early, but he's built extremely well and will shoot up draft boards.

  • Marshawn Lynch got under 4.5 unofficially in his second forty time. That's fast enough. The NFL Network hosts said his 'wide base' running style works well in football, but not on the track. Another player whose first ten and twenty-yard splits were better than his last twenty was Notre Dame RB Darius Walker. He ran in the 4.5's. His long speed isn't great, but he's explosive near the line of scrimmage where it counts.

  • Before I check out for the afternoon, Mark Curnette of the Cincinnati Enquirer had two links worth checking out. He takes a look at the growing economic disparity among teams in the NFL. On a more personal note, his blog takes the Bengals' media policy to task and doesn't pull punches.

These are the types of situations that make me think about working in the Toy Department of Human Affairs. None of this stuff really matters; it doesn't. And I often have to convince myself that it does. All I'm doing is helping make a bunch of rich people richer.

And the attitudes of many of those in the industry are heavily inflated and world view dangerously myopic.

Ouch. I'm off to try to broaden my world view for a few hours by staying away from this blog. Thanks for stopping by this weekend.
