Patriots Guilt

I almost feel guilty for being a Patriots fan. It's not that the Patriots are lucky (although that's certainly a factor), it's that we've been handed an embarrassment of classic games to enjoy over the last six seasons. There are certainly more deserving fanbases out there that could use some January cheer.

Last night's win over the Chargers ranks among the best, probably better than any AFC playoff win since 2001. It's certainly the best comeback since Adam Vinatieri closed old Foxboro Stadium against the Raiders in the snow.

This team reminds me a lot of the 2001 squad, right down to Tom Brady not playing particularly well all the time. The Chargers were the better team for big chunks of the game Sunday, but the Patriots played physical, stuck around, received some wacky plays in their favor and were extremely good playing situational football. The touchdown to end the first half, to make it 14-10, was the most important drive of the game. The Patriots were getting crushed but only trailed by four on the scoreboard.

Their offense was overmatched by San Diego for over 50 minutes - the last two minutes of the first half, and the last six minutes of the game were the exception. Give the Chargers defense credit for getting Brady so off his game. The Patriots defense had no real answer for LaDainian Tomlinson, but made stops when they needed them the most, like when they tied the game late in the fourth quarter.

It's hard for the Patriots to play the 'underdog' card after three Super Bowl wins, but it's the role they are most comfortable in. It's in their team DNA. The oddsmakers did them a favor by making the Colts three point favorites for the AFC Championship.

The Colts present even more matchup problems for New England than San Diego did, and winning twice in a row on the road is difficult in the playoffs. This is also a much different and better Colts team than the Patriots have beaten in AFC playoffs past. I predicted a Colts victory over New England in the AFC Championship a few weeks back, and a very small part of me would feel bad for Tony Dungy if he was turned away again. Then I'm reminded that Bill Polian and his evil son Chris still run the Colts.

I'll be busy today with our baseball magazine wrapping up, so the blog could be quiet. Evan Silva will be on Marty-watch tonight on Rotoworld if nothing comes down during the afternoon.

Start Warming Up Tiff!

Tiffany and I made a bet concerning our playoff picks. Loser has to sing the fight song (or whatever comes closest at Tulane) on the Fix.

After just two weeks, it's already over.

Tiffany: 3-6
Gregg: 7-2

Sorry Tiffany, but it's probably for the best. I would use this space to gloat or do the "Lights Out" celebration, but I don't want to be accused of rubbing it in like those nasty Patriots. How dare they mimic Shawne Merriman, that pillar of what sportsmanship is all about!

My boss Rick Cordella at Rotoworld also said I should do some chest beating for nailing predictions for both Championship games before the playoffs. I've thought it was the Colts year all along, but I hope I'm wrong.

I picked the wrong year to quit gambling. And now the most insufferable post in this blog's short history is over.

Quotes of the Weekend

Reporter: "How long have these last two weeks been for you, Rex?"
Rex: "14 days"

I suddenly like Rex Grossman more than I used to.

Another one of my favorites was from LaDainian Tomlinson, "You guys know me, I'm a classy guy."

Well, if you have to say it...

    Bearly Enough

In the end, it wasn't about Rex Grossman. He played well enough the whole game when he had protection, yet the Seahawks still had three chances to win the game in the final two minutes and overtime.

The Bears defense gave up a lot of yards all day, but they managed to tighten up on third and fourth down when they needed to. Seattle converted 6-of-18 third and fourth downs and saw many good drives stall before a touchdown.

For the second straight year, Matt Hasselbeck will live through an off-season in which he knows his team was that close to pulling off a major upset. They just didn't play efficiently in the big moments. You have to wonder how many more chances this Holmgren-Hasselbeck-Alexander Seahawk team will get.

I'll have plenty of thoughts on the Championship games throughout the week, but it's time to head over to Rotoworld and finish my responsibilities there, then watch the Main-Event: Chargers-Patriots.

Thanks for stopping by this weekend.

Why Gould is an All Pro

Never a doubt. Best kicker in the league.

    Overtime Strategy

The Seahawks should spread the Bears out with three receivers, and run Shaun Alexander up the middle in between timing patterns.

Seattle hasn't had much success going deep, but they have been tough to stop when they are willing to work the field slowly.

    Josh Brown warming up ...

How many times this season has Seattle ended a game on a long Josh Brown field goal? (4)

If Chicago has a Super Bowl quality defense, they won't let him get a chance.

    Guts

It would take a lot of guts for Mike Holmgren to go for fourth-and-one with only two minutes left from the 44-yard line. He'll take the heat for the loss if it doesn't work and the Bears win.

But you only get so many chances to take complete control of a playoff game, on the road, against the top seed. I bet he goes for the win.

Update: He does go for it and Hasselbeck bobbles the snap for the first time all day - Alexander stopped.

But the Bears are stopped three and out when Rex Grossman has two passes tipped.

    Gross Reaction

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Rex Grossman made a big grimace after hearing the play call before third-and-ten on the 24-yard line with just over five minutes left.

I don't blame him. The Bears ran Thomas Jones for one yard, and Robbie Gould barely snuck a 42-yard field goal over the cross bar to tie the game. Grossman has played well overall today. The Bears have scored three touchdowns and would have more if not for drops. Have some faith in the guy and let him try to win the game.

    Why Gould is no All-Pro

If a guy can't attempt a 49-yard field goal to tie a playoff game in the fourth quarter, he's not one of the best kickers in the league.
